"This post is about the desktop operating systems that fly under the radar of most people. We are definitely not talking about Windows, Mac OS X or Linux, or even BSD or Solaris. There are much less mainstream options out there for the OS-curious." Though the article doesn't go into much detail about the OSes, it is a good round up of some of the interesting candidates.

sadly, those guys mightve made something usefull if they combined powers.. (in b4 captain planet)
they are nice to show waht you are capable of, but support and compatibility is far below even that of linux, and therefore wouldnt be practical for 99.999999% of users.

Even though it includes a graphical desktop, networking and many other features it still fits on a single 1.44 MB floppy disk (for our younger readers, that was the USB stick of the 80s and early 90s

lol...

some of these look pretty cool, but does any of them run DirectX?

Yeah, ReactOS looks pretty interesting

I've tried a few of these and have the iso's lying around, Namely, ReactOs, Haiku and Syllable. Didn't spend much time using them and meant to give them a more indepth test but never did.

I'm dissapointed with React OS. I go to install it on a VM and it comes upon a critical error when installing with the option of a cingle cpu pc. With the mulit cpu option on, it installs but when React goes to load after its done installing it says it cant find one of the kernel files.

Epic dissapointment

hmm, the standard PC setup worked for me in virtualbox.

Nice to see AmigaOS still going strong... Workbench as it used to be called, beat the crap out of Windows 3.1 and 95 in some respects. I hated the jump to PC because of that, but it was necessary seeing Commodore ballsed up the Amiga good and proper and went bust...

Never been the same since really... :'(

Don't worry, it's horribly buggy on a physical computer (if you can even get it to install).

Used AmigaOS and ReactOS

Was actually just reading an argument last night arguing for Amega to be open sourced, and its about time IMO.. thin how much faster it would be ported to x86
