Yes, it works just fine, so long as it is not the scented or colored ones that some nail polish removers add.
Alcohol (99%) is better though.

Sure but I in general prefer rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is much safer around "plastic". If rubbing alcohol did not work in dissolving the thermal compound OK Acetone but doesn't happen much. Not sure Acetone would do a lot better?

But yea ain't gonna hurt nothing.

I'm using acetone for well over a year now and no damage sofar. Even with a lapped CPU.

Every day, once a week or a professional?

Or do you mean for your nails?

Not joking I mean what does that mean?

How many times do you clean thermal compound? If everyday on one computer? What are you saying?

If you get any on the mobo or anything else, it will melt it. Be VERY careful when using acetone, you could destroy your components. I would stick to 90% alcohol.

I use it on my CPU, waterblocks and HSF everytime I reseat them.

I've had like 5 different coolers and did many reseats.

I've used acetone for cleaning pcb boards for years, I've used it in client systems when removing thermal paste, I use it to clean my thermal paste off of my own parts ranging from video cards to cpus. Hell, I just used it on my video card pcb when I accidentally had some paste on my finger during a heatsink re-seat and smeared on to my 7200gs when handling it. I buy pure acetone from my local hardware store, no additives.

Just as a safety reminder, for both acetone and alcohol chemicals. Please work in ventilated areas and if you touch either one a lot (ie: daily), please wear chem resist gloves.

I always thought alcohol was pretty safe as its the major ingredient of the hand cleaners like germ x and even facial cleaners.

Quick, someone get some Acetone, I got some old ISA boards to try this on...

Try what? Acetone doesn't do anything to PCBs.

10-60% concentration in cleansers is very different from 99% concentration in cleaners
