2.1 Speakers and Sound Blaster Z + headphones / amp?

So I've always used either headphones or 5.1 speakers on my comp so I'm curious about something. I have a Sound Blaster Z and if I wanted to switch to 2.1 speakers what socket on the sound blaster would I use? With 5.1 it's obvious I would use the 3 designated ports + the headphone port for my headphones. But with 2.1 speakers would I have to use the Headphone Socket + Sub for the 2.1 speakers and no headphones?

Are there 2.1 speakers with a powered headphone amp built in?

Only the headphone output is powered. Moving from there toward the optical end of the card are your Front L/R line out, Rear L/R line out, and center/sub line out. All are passive.

Assuming you have the typical 2.1 package with a powered subwoofer that also feeds the L/R main channels, you run a 3.5 mm cable from the Front L/R main on the Z to the sub, and the L/R fronts feed from the sub. (sub and rear ports not used)

If you have separate, non-matched sub and main speakers, it's runs just like the label. Your L/R mains will run on a 3.5mm line out from the front L/R port and the sub will run on a line out from the sub port. (rear port not used)

If your sub isn't powered, your going to need an in-line amplifier or another plan.

Speaker amplifier, right?

You just use the front speaker port of your SBZ.
