30 inch monitor vs. 32 inch tv.

I am looking at getting a new TV to replace my old CRT 22 inch TV. I want to get a 32 inch 1080p TV; but also use this TV as a monitor for my computer as well. 30 inch monitors go for about $1000, while the 32 inch 1080p TVs go for $400.

Is the only difference the resolution? I know the monitors are 2560 x 1600 16:10 , and the TVs are 1920 x 1080 , 16:9.

Are there any advantages to getting a monitor for $600 more besides the higher resolution and different aspect ratio? Are these advantages worth $600 more in price?

I am a monitor noob, but only difference besides the res that I know of are.

Response time
Gamut
Refresh rate.

Depends on the TV that you get. I would not get a TV that I could not find a review on where someone used it as a monitor.

$600.00 would make me lean towards the TV hard.

Get the monitor, youll be much happier with it. More res, more room, prettier colors. Everything is better on a monitor over the tv...

If you have the ban go for a 30" LCD (Waay higher Resolution, Made to be used as a computer screen.)

a 32" tv will look really weird close up considering that the max resolution is 1920x1080. (Not to mention the fact that TV screens are made for long distance viewing.)

Looks like the "pixel response time" is 5ms for the monitor and 6ms for the TV, so I don't think that would be a noticeable difference. Is that the same thing as refresh rate?

I would still do most of my computer work on my current Samsung 22inch 2253BW monitor, but would play first person shooters and some RPG's on the TV. Other than gaming it's typical use would be as a HDTV, playing Blu-ray movies and watching HD channels.

Here are two hypothetical products, not necessarily the ones I would be purchasing.

Monitor:

TV:

right now I am definitely leaning towards the TV just for the large price difference.

Both have downsides.

The monitor has almost twice as many pixels as the TV, which means that your 5770s are going to struggle to max out modern games at the native res.

However 1080 might have kinda blurry text when viewed close up.

This. The monitor will look a lot crisper close up, but will be the death of your video cards. The T.V. might produce an ugly picture close up, but won't rape your graphics subsystem. I'd go with the monitor, unless you had a legit reason for that much real estate (design work, etc.)

Everyone telling you to get the 30" monitor is failing to realize that you only have a 5770 Crossfire setup. Those two cards are EXCELLENT at 1920x1080, but definitely fall short at 2560x1600.

I sit literally at 1.5 ft - 2 ft. away from my 32" 1080P HDTV and the image quality is just fine. This however, is a subjective opinion.

Yes, you will get a sharper, clearer image on the higher res monitor, and you'd have more usable desk space, BUT... your FPS will take a major dive while gaming.

Just a few things you'd have to consider when choosing.

EDIT: Damn, I got uber-ninja'ed!

My normal 22 inch monitor is the one I will sit at "monitor distance" 1.5-2 feet. My TV will be 4-6 feet away; which sounds like if Bo Punk is seeing it clearly at 1.5-2, 4-6 should definitely be fine. I appreciate all the advice but I fact I would have to pay $600 more for the monitor itself and another $400 probably on better graphics cards makes it clear to me that the TV is still the better option. Money was probably my biggest concern going in, but I just wanted to make sure I was not missing something and would regret my decision later. If anyone has any additional points I would be happy to read them though.

Thanks to everyone.

If your willing to go the 30" monitor road, trust me you will like it so much you will never go back. The desktop space of a 30" monitor is awe inspiring. Gaming at 2560x1600 is like a whole new world. Make sure you have considerable graphics horsepower to play games on a 30" though. Cons I will say about the monitor is that text reading is sometimes difficult because its so small, you may need to zoom in sometimes to read it, and also dont think about AA at full resolution most games max 1gb video ram at 2xaa-4xaa or sometimes none at all. Other than that go for it.

from my experience, lcd tv is bad, when u use it @not on its native reso, the colour become so bad....

like LCD TV hd ready, altough it support 1080i << that's not it's native...and its bad...
hd ready on lcd tv about : 1280 : 720, or 1360 x 768 << beside that' reso (above/under) the display are bad....

so if u're going for lcd tv, ur resolution for display are going to be locked @tv's native resolution....

and u'll need to tweak the colouration/contrast if u using LCD TV for best display ^^

so if u're going for LCD TV, IMO , going for full HD and has hi refresh rate... ^^ and don't go above 32" inch.....
why ? big screen hi res = smaller looking text/all output/sharper, u're not really gonna enjoy it from far distance rite ?(like game's GUI, etc)

Oh I hope I'm not too late. But most 30" monitors are S-IPS monitors whereas just about everything else in this day is TN if were talking LCDs. I've no personal experience between the two but everyone that does says once you go S-IPS you don't go back. Sort of like with black men. But again, no personal experience there...
