Hey guys,
I bought a laptop a couple weeks ago and was thinking about buying an Extended 1 year warranty + ADP Plan for $79.00. I have a Lenovo P580 (purchased from Best Buy @$594.99), I am a student as well as an IT intern so I am always on the go from school to work and home, so my laptop is with me most of the time.

I ttreat my devices with great care, I purchased my first laptop in 2007, turned 5 years old this month, I still have it today it runs great and has windows 7/8 running on it. Currently have it at home as a back up laptop. Never fixed anything on it, only upgraded the ram from 1GB to 4GB and installed Windows 7. Back then I didn't travel as much, so my laptop was home or in its bag most of the time.

Do you think a ADP plan is worth it?

Details about the plan:

1. $79.00
2. 1 Year Extended In-home Warranty + 1 year ADP (Meaning that they would come out to site and fix it instead of mailing it in and replace it if needed)
3. Plan will be purchased from LENOVO not Bestbuy or geek squad.

Just spoke to Lenovo this how they have the package setup the crossed out package are just regular warranty extensions. The ADP last as long as the extended Warranty purchased.

It depends on how much the laptop means to you and if you're ready to pay out of pocket if that something goes wrong unexpectedly.
I'd never pay for an $80 plan for a $300 netbook, but if it were $200 for a 3-year plan for a $2000 laptop, I'd consider it.
Yea for a 300 netbook nawh..

I paid $594.99 for the laptop on tax free weekend. Hence why I was considering it.

The ADP plan i was looking at was a bundle: 1 year extended manufacturer warranty + one year ADP @ 79.00

Being a student money can get tight at unexpected times which can always put you in a pinch especially when you need to make a big purchase.

Not that I plan on being reckless with my laptop cuz I don't plan on buy another anytime soon. My last one went 5 years and still going strong with Windows 7, but as you say accidents don't only apply to reckless people. Traveling tends to increase the likeliness of something happening.

It's really a toss up though. Pay 79.00 for extend 1year warranty which covers everything except the battery + one year ADP can save you some $$$ in the event that something does happen.

Accidental damage protection (ThinkPad Protection / Lenovo Care Protection Service) can only be purchased within 90 days of the standard warranty (base warranty) start date.
so have another 2.5 months to think about it.

It really depends how important the laptop is to you in working condition during that time, and how careful you are

1-year accidental just isn't worth it- too short of a time, and you're only guaranteed a working system for 1 year, while you'll probably keep it for say 3 years. 3-year for $150, well worth it. If it breaks in 2-3 years, get a new system with a 14nm Broadwell quad and some insane Nvidia 860M graphics on 22nm. Breaks in 10 months (not likely), you get the exact same laptop.

As a fellow student, warranties are great to have. You might be careful with your laptop, but someone else might cause it to break. Someone tripping over the charger, spilling something on it, or any freak accident. I would definitely buy it. When I had my Lenovo, it broke twice in the first year. First, friend knocked it over and secondly, frying the video card (my fault, not bad hardware). Both times Lenovo fixed it free of charge and I used school computers when it was being fixed. You're going to be moving that laptop around a lot from school - work - home, you'll never know when something could go wrong.

On the other hand, if you kept your laptop at home, I wouldn't buy a warranty knowing that it is at less risk to get broken.

I'd get the 3 year plan for $150.

Also note that it's 1 year from your purchase, not 1 year plus the original warranty.

Thanks for the tip.. just looked at it... starts @ $99 for 2 year warranty + ADH or $129 for 3 year (well 2 years warranty as they refer you to the manufacturer for the first year but 3 years adp/adh)

Still bit cheaper than Lenovo... but kida prefer dealing with Lenovo since my job is a Lenovo partner and I have dealt with them before... will look at some Square Trade reviews

Get at least a two year ADP warranty. It's worth it when you look at it from down the road. the three year warranty is only good if the machine dies on you due to normal causes. That warranty doesn't cover damage caused by you.

Get the 2-year in home ADP warranty and you'll be good.
