AOC E1759FWU 17" USB Monitor Review

review by williamgayde

With all the craze over graphics cards and high resolution monitors, USB monitors have become nearly unheard of. Why would anyone ever want one? Keep reading to find out.

AOC?s E1759FWU is a sleek 1600x900 resolution monitor with a folding stand. It measures 17.3? diagonally, has a contrast ratio of 650:1, and has a 10ms response time. AOC packages the monitor in a vibrant box that lists all the important information.

Inside the box we get a black carrying case, a USB cable, a driver disc, instructions, and the monitor itself.

The monitor does not come with a typical stand. Instead there is a folding metal piece on the back that it rests on. This allows the monitor to work in portrait or landscape mode without adjustments. The monitor also has a motion sensor that automatically pivots the display.

From the back we see that metal kickstand. Also visible is the only port on the monitor. It features a single micro USB 3.0 port and comes with holes for a VESA mount. It can be mounted to VESA compatible stands as a great auxiliary monitor.

The cable terminates in two plugs. One carries the data while the other provides extra power. This second plug may not be necessary depending on the power output of your device. I tested on multiple computers and never personally needed it. I also found that the monitor worked fine on USB2.0 as well without any significant drawbacks. This will again depend on the power output of your device as USB3.0 can provide much more current.

To get started, plug the monitor in, install the latest drivers off AOC's website, restart, and you are done. It will show up just like any other monitor. You can adjust the resolution and on-screen placement from the windows Screen Resolution menu. Once that is done, the monitor will work on that computer forever. The only drawback to this is you have to install the drivers on every computer you use it on.

Now on to performance. Keep in mind that this is a USB monitor and does not require a graphics card or external power supply. That being said, the colors were pretty good. The driver only allows for brightness and gamma adjustment, but I was able to get it looking rather nice. It?s no IPS with the colors lacking some vibrancy, but they were acceptable. I did notice greens being a bit flat as well. Again, for a USB monitor this is pretty good. The biggest potential drawback is the significant amount of input lag. It was very distracting moving my mouse over to the E1759FWU from another monitor. Video playback was fine but I wouldn't use the monitor for applications that require interaction or mouse movement like gaming.

Now, who would want a USB monitor? Why not just get a standard monitor that plugs in to your GPU? The answer is not everyone needs a setup like that. The E1759FWU is perfect for an IT professional who manages many computers or servers. If a problem arises, the monitor's portability is a huge plus. You don't need to fiddle in the back for the video port or lug around a bulky power brick. Simply plug it in, solve the problem, then leave. It would also be good in an enterprise setting. Keeping a spreadsheet or report open on a secondary monitor can save lots of time from having to switch back and forth.

Conclusion time. AOC's E1759FWU is a great USB monitor. It is easy to setup, has acceptable color reproduction, and auto rotates. It does bring a significant amount of input lag and has somewhat flat colors, but running without a GPU, what can you expect. It is not a gaming or content creation monitor, but sure works great for a portable auxiliary monitor.

Get it here.

ProsCons
Portable, Auto rotates, Good color reproduction, USB2.0 compatible, Easy setup, VESA mountSignificant input lag, Some flat colors

AOC E1759FWU 17" USB Monitor Review

I had no idea this was an option!

How does it work in terms of drivers? You listed a use case of using it as a crash cart monitor in a datacenter. Is the server BIOS or a linux kernel going to output to the USB monitor? I imagine you would have to preinstall the drivers on all the baremetal windows machines ahead of time, or do most Windows installations have the necessary drivers already?
