NEW YORK (AP) - Sony says it has sold 1.2 million PlayStation Vitas worldwide.

The handheld game system launched last week in North America, Latin America, Europe and elsewhere. It went on sale in December in Japan and other parts of Asia.

Sony Corp. said Tuesday that the sales figure is as of Feb. 26. It did not break out figures by region, so it's not known how many of the sales came from last week's launch.

More than 2 million games have been sold for the device. The Vita costs $250 or $300 in the U.S. depending on what type of wireless connection you want. It has a front and a back touch screen and two analog controllers to use for shooters and a bevy of other games.
I quote the whole thing, since is isn't much and not alot of detail

Doing some lolmath...

Lets say 600k wifi only sold @$250 price = $150mil
600k of 3G/wifi sold @$300 price = $180mil

so total around $330mil

exclusing labor cost, material cost, etc

i wonder if sony making or losing anything at all on each PS VITA sold

but still $330mil from Dec to Feb 26 isn't impressive at all in my opinion

I haven't seen one on the streets yet and, on release, the PSP popped up quick in my area. Gloomy forcast.

I seen someone with it the other day when i was NYC Subway

He had a PS VITA, couldn't tell if it 3G or Wifi only, he had a flip case on, with no screen protector on i believe, and was playing some kind of ball puzzle game lol

Mine had Screen protector, silicon soft case and an Official Pouch case, all i need now is a protector for the back, and is isn't much on ebay ; ; XD

Heck, I haven't even seen a 3DS out in the wild yet (other than my own). I think it'll at least be a bit longer before you see anyone with a Vita.

Though, I have noticed a TON of people with smartphones and other touchscreen devices. Maybe that's the difference - where I am doesn't involve long waiting periods, so maybe just a smart phone is enough to hold someone over until they're done waiting for whatever.

i remember reading somewhere that a preliminary guess to the cost of each vita was about $160 usd, looking at the cost of most the chips inside the unit. Where the screen was the most expensive part at around $50-60 i think it was, everything else was less then $10-20

I can't speak for the vita one, but the one on ps3 was surprisingly fun (I say surprisingly as I don't particularly care for racing games). My main gripe with it was it had horrid load times, I eventually sold it, not long after purchase for that reason alone...though apparently it had a patch to shorten the times, not sure how that worked out.

I'd buy Vita ASAP if there were proper games for it. By proper i mean Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Uncharted, Skyrim, Dead Space, Mass Effect 3. All we have crappy cart racing games or puzzle shiz.

If Bethesda decides to port Skyrim Game of the year edition to Vita, then that alone would be the reason of my Vita purchase.

Even if this is true it will still be awhile before they cover the R&D of the Unit. Personally though I love mine and just hope there are a lot more high quality games like it coming out soon. I hear there is a Call of Duty Vita, that could put Vita on the map in the USA and EU

i only saw 3 people currently with a ps vita Me, my friend and some guy who works in ebgames who showed it to us.
The Vita has more RAM than a PS3, but Bethesda would likely have to cut polys from meshes and lower texture quality a bit. Neither of those things would be noticeable on a 5" screen, but they would take a good amount of time. I doubt Bethesda would consider putting a game like Skyrim on the Vita unless they saw some really good sales numbers for the system. It's a chicken and egg problem, a lot of people are afraid to develop for the system because it may not sell well, and it may not sell well because few companies are developing great games for it.

I look forward to games like Warrior's Lair, which is basically a Diablo clone for the Vita and PS3, but it is at least 6 months away. Also I might consider getting Assassin's Creed for the Vita if it gets good reviews, although I hate supporting Ubisoft in any way. They're also releasing a Bioshock for Vita sometime this year as well.

Although is true developer want to see good sale number before making them for that console but sometime good game drive in the sale up for the console if they willing to take risk. If they really somehow ported into PS vita I'm sure the console sales will go up. Just my 2 cents

Btw for people still waiting... you can play Netflix on your vita

Excellent numbers! count me among those 1.2 million, The Vita is by far the best portable gaming device on the market to date, nothing comes close.

I've heard the Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford says trying to get Borderlands 2 on PlayStation Vita, and wants to make it happen. another rumors that rockstar consider getting GTA iV on vita like PSP GTA: LCS, VCS did..

I love my Vita, and pretty much everyone who owns one or reviewed it is also loving it. Sales not blowing people away early isn't any indication of how a system will do, but positive reactions to the system is far more important. Look at the PS2, sales were meh, but it ended up being the most successful console of all time.

The last bit of this IGN article sums up my feelings nicely:

There's also the very significant fact that almost everyone who's played with a PlayStation Vita is enamoured with it. It is undeniably a lovely, lovely console, touched by that hardware design magic that only Sony delivers. Its launch line-up is both strong and impressively broad, and its other software is attractively presented and fully implemented. The 3DS, meanwhile, launched with a rather divisive design, no eShop and a poor launch line-up that took months to mature. People were, perhaps, more eager to write it off.

The games media generally has a very short memory, especially when it comes to console launches. The PlayStation 2's initial troubles were forgotten in the wake of its later astronomical success, and by this time next year it's feasible that nobody will remember that the 3DS didn't start off in the most promising way either. When you look behind the numbers, what you see is that a successful launch isn't always about how much you actually sell - it's about perception. The reaction to sales figures often says as much about the mentality and health of the games industry as the numbers themselves.
