Hi all,

I cant seem to get this cpu to sit under 100C under p95 full load, no matter how low I go on voltage (crashes under 1.34 vcore) . Lowest I could go for LLC is level 3, anything under crash again. I am using a Noctua NH-D15 coller, with the socket 1700 adapter.... it should keep it on stock at least cooled, no? case is open so eliminating any airflow issues....

No overclocking at this stage; all settings at auto (XMP1 for memory) , and there are always 3 performance cores throttling under full load, core 1, 3 and 5. Others sit under 100 nicely.

Many thanks for any input.

That looks like insufficient cooler, bad cooler mounting, or paste issue. to me.
Otherwise bios is janked. have you reset the bios to default?
And also running the latest bios.

Forgot to mention when setting XMP profile double check you CPU settings as it might overclock or overvolt automatically,
reset_CMOS and don't use XMP, test it out.

Yeah, I'm getting about the same with the Dark Rock Pro 4. I'd expect a little better performance from the D15, but that looks about right.

Chip runs hot.

Gonna need

You need to set per core OC. or and set a wattage/temp limit. There are different ways of doing the same goal in the end.

You are only going to be able to cool probably 1.2v or less under load is my guess. Not sure as I havent used air cooler on 12900k so you need to find what that is like a 46 or 48 or less all core.

Prime95 is super stressful and most dont use it that I know of. I think more people use something like Cinebench r 20 and r23 to stress test. They are more realistic stress tests.

Arctic 420 is one of the best for cooling and lower noise levels. That is what I am using and I also have a custom loop and compared temps and they are identical. It is tough to find a case the fit the 420 though. I went with Fractal Torrent.

12700k + ROG STRIX Z690-A GAMING WIFI D4... Read some of my posts in that thread for more info if you want.

This vid show the diferrence between 360 vs 420. 9c on 12700k. It is a pretty jump up in cooling if you can fit it. 360mm wouldnt cool 12900k in that vid.

Yes, it is. It even has "best turbo/overclocking headroom".

In fact, props to Noctua for acknowledging that "TDP" alone is becoming kind of meaningless.
Because the Dark Rock Pro 4 straight up advertises 250 TDP even though everybody knows that it's smaller than the D15.
Don't go around telling anybody that the largest air cooler on the market can't handle the 12900K.

Stop chasing prime95 stability. Set settings and just use your PC as you intend to use it instead. If you get errors or crashes, increase the voltage. In a few months you'll have a stable PC.

Hi,
Thanks for feedback. I am a perfectionist, so if I have stability in prim95, I know it is stable in everything I throw at it :)

. But it is not unstable, it just has 3 out of 5 performance cores throttling down due to hitting the max temp. It is still stable..
I suppose you are right, no point throwing prime at it. I see in games it is quite allright. The max usage it gets is games and photo editing in photoshop, but that is also piece of cake for this processor. Fans barely spin up when I edit.

Yep. It is a tight fit but it can be done. Someone else on this board did it and he is using push/pull. I think the default setup is fine. I just put the fans in pull as push will be harder to setup(line up fans and attach rad.. You will see when you get it. But push can work also.

You have to remove bottom front 140mm as tubes will hit the fan. You can see it in my pic.

Hey, @bscool one more quick question; where do I connect that little 3 pin dongle that comes from that led light strip under the power supply to light it up.... I can't seem to find an appropriate connector for RGB or lighting on motherboard.. I have an Asus ROG Strix z490-e wifi... many thanks!

Otherwise it seems to be running under 90 degrees now with full prime 95 load, with not much more noise than the noctua Nh-d15, which is nice... and that's on the 2 hottest performance cores, others are under 80...
