Bad Bios Checksum (even after flashing)

Hi everyone. This is perhaps the 7th or 8th box I've put together... I'm running into a serious problem. I'm using an asus mn2-mx se plus motherboard which i got as part of a cpu combo package deal from tiger direct. When I first powered it on, I got a Bad Bios Checksum message, and so I located and inserted the motherboard disk, which then rewrote the bios. It appeared successful, but it continues to show this message every time it tries to boot

I might also mention at this point that i couldn't get any display using the built in video adapter, but i could when I installed the video card i purchased for this beast.

Anyhow, being a fan of the idea of user error, I assumed at this point that i must have damaged the motherboard, or perhaps had gotten a dud. So i replaced it with the same model from tiger, they swapped it out for me no problem. When I installed the new motherboard and powered the system up, I got the same error. Frustrated, I thought to myself, 'wow maybe its the processor somehow'. Tiger doesnt exchange processors so i bought another one on ebay. Guess what, same error. Still flashes 'correctly' but doesnt work.

I've dissassebled and reassembled this thing 3 times over now, replaced the motherboard and cpu, and could really use some advice.

!

Why would this be a solution to both motherboards showing this error? these were brand new boards

trying to contact asus tech support now while i wait for more responses. if they get me a solution first i'll post it here. but i'm somehow doubtful that they will help, so i'm still open to suggestions here!!!!

This one is really strange... it appears to me that the BIOS is the wrong version, or something like that. It seems highly unlikely that both boards and CPU's were bad... so I would guess there is a conflict in there somewhere.

Are you sure that the BIOS version that you are using supports the CPU that you put in there? Alot of times the disks that come with the boards are very out dated, and I wouldn't be to surprised to see that the processor you have isn't supported in there. While I am not certain that is what is causing it, I think its worth trying to work around.

Try downloading the latest BIOS onto a USB drive, and then flashing the BIOS to that, and see if that resolves the issue.

Good luck, and welcome to OCN.

Freethought, I agree with Logan. Try flashing to a newer BIOS and see if that helps. Go to: http://support.asus.com/download/dow...el=M2N-MX%20SE, choose your Operating system and then clock on "BIOS"(on the left). That should list all the different BIOS versions. It appears the newest version is 0501. What processor came with this motherboard?

Also removing the battery will clear the CMOS. Doing this will sometimes clear error messages that are appearing at POST. You could also be getting a bad batch of boards. Did you try a different CMOS battery? If the voltage is lower then 3.0 volts then you will also experience problems (weird anomalies at POST).

Good luck

ok, after another friend was doing some research on this with me, we ran into several complaints from users of this particular motherboard stating that they had received dead batteries when shipped, i took my battery out of my fried motherboard and put it in, cleared cmos again, placed only one stick of ram in it, let it flash the bios again, and suddenly i start getting video out of the on board chip.

i was extremely relieved, but then.... i sealed everything up and it wouldn't post or realyl do anything except for start the fans up. so i opened it back up and tried several configurations, including the one that had worked earlier, and for some reason it seemed about an hour or so later that it was going to refuse to come up again.

so i switched the ram stick with another one, and this time it flashed the bios, but kept cycling as it originally did. i put back in the first ram stick and it flashed again and this time it came back up. it turned out i couldnt put in ANYTHING else except for the hard drive, which by the way of course wouldnt boot up the existing installation of vista, so i wiped it, and i'm currently updating vista and the bios itself as well from the net and i'm FREAKING PRAYING that doing this will let me put my other ram in also, and maybe even let me use my video card... this is the pickiest motherboard i've ever used in my entire life.... when/if i get it fully finished... i'm not opening the case again for a long long time, thanks for everyones help and suggestions/explanations/advice are still welcome on this thing.

Freethought, were you able to add any more memory? I do know some users that have owned the M2N-MX SE haven't been happy with it but you are the first to describe the above issues. Very odd

Vlasov, that has got me confused as well. For testing purposes have you tried multiple power supplies?

Good luck
