Hi everyone,

My friend has an AMD X2, I believe its a 4600+, its a 2.4GHz, I believe it can be overclocked to 2.7 or close to 3ghz, but I just wanted to ask what might be the best upgrade on an AM2 socket? They do a lot of gaming and the CPU is really dropping the FPS on quite a few games etc, they will be getting a new motherboard and CPU, probably an Asus with a X4 965 BE, but I thought I would ask to see if there is any specific AM2 socket chip that could be used as a stop gap CPU until enough funds can be got together for a new mobo, cpu and cooler etc.

I'd say wait, there is no point getting a new CPU, just to get anew one. The more he saves the quicker he gets his new CPU/mobo/RAM

if hes gona get a new mobo and cpu soon when funds become availble it would be a watse to use like $100 to upgrade the cpu now.. thats $100 faster tord a new mobo/cpu that he will acculy like

It would be nice to know specifics about the current setup, but here IMO
Well if you need to keep with in a strict budget. You could go my route. I bought a 555BE and a board that could unlock it to a quad core. Here's the CPU

Here's a ddr3 MOBO

Boath boards are well priced and will unlock cores and Caches.

Agreed, there is no point in going to a stopgap CPU with prices for decent hardware so low. Just get the new mobo and CPU as funds allow and then upgrade.
