Corsair H100 leaked onto my brand new graphics card and motherboard

** UPDATE: 17/10/2012 **

For those people that don't want to read through the whole thread to find out what happened with the RMA process, here is a quick summary.

Corsair initially offered me a replacement or refund for the H100, $150 for my damaged GTX 670 and a free 120gb SSD drive (in the end I did not claim damages for the motherboard).

Note that according to a new Corsair policy, the $150 offered for my damaged GTX 670 was was maximum amount of compensation they could offer for a damaged GPU. It was this new policy of limiting compensation given for parts damaged by a leaking cooler (or in some other situations) that caused the most contention on this thread as it seems that prior to this thread most people (including myself) were under the impression that they would get full compensation for parts damaged by a leaking Corsair closed loop cooler as that had been the case in the past.

However, approximately 7 weeks after starting this thread, numerous emails to Corsair, some involvement from the shop I purchased the H100 from, assistance from CorsairGeorge, and most importantly, overwhelming support and interest from a lot of people on this forum... Corsair finally agreed to compensate me in full for both the H100 and the GTX 670.

It is not clear to me where things currently stand with the new policy of limiting compensation given for damage to components now though I think it's fair to say that Corsair will treat and evaluate any case on an individual basis. If I hear anything else about it I will update this thread.

For those that would like to know how it all unfolded in detail, read on....

So after years of thinking about building a new 'dream' computer I finally made a start on it. The system is less than a month old and up until last night it seemed to be working fine, then the graphics card started playing up and I was getting BSOD every time I booted up.

So I open up the case and discovered that my brand new Corsair H100 cooler had been leaking onto my brand new Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce 3 graphics card and also onto/into one of the heat sinks on my brand new ASUS P9x79 Pro motherboard

My situation is almost identical to the one that Tybotikus has in this thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1223748/help-h100-leaking-need-advice

I have a lot of respect for Corsair and the quality of their products. So much so that I chose a Corsair case, psu, ram and cooler for my build. I was tossing up between doing a custom cooling setup or using one of the closed loop cooling solutions. In the end I decided I would play it safe initially and use a closed loop system as I was worried about leaking if I did a custom cooling loop. I understand leaking CLC's are very rare though. I have the worst luck it seems.

Anyway, I now have to start the "probably" long, frustrating process of RMA'ing. I've never done it before. I only hope that Corsair will cover me for the damaged graphics card and motherboard as I spent all the money I can afford on this build.

Wow! I'm sorry dude! This is only the 2nd time I've ever seen this happened. Usually Corsair responds within 24 hours. They have really good customer service, so I doubt you'll have problems. As for your motherboard and GPU, I believe Corsair covers the cost so long as you provide an invoice or proof of purchase. Not ENTIRELY sure about that part. Let us know how it goes.

I've never done a RMA on a cooler with corsair but the RMA for my PSU was extremely fast. Mailed it monday and got confimation of them shipping one today. Not entirely sure how they cover damaged parts but they will certainly take care of you with out much/any hassle.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma

I have heard they cover the cost of replacing the ruined components as well.

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone. I have started the RMA process and will keep you posted on how it goes.

I live on the other side of the world from Corsair so they will hopefully respond over night.

It's good to know that Corsair's customer service is held in such high regard. Gives me some hope that I will be up and running again soon.

After taking what I hope was enough photographic evidence, I removed the cooler. I would have thought that if it leaked anywhere it would have been where the pipes connected to the block, but it seems to have leaked along the seam on the block:

Yuk, that's terrible, sorry to see that happened to you. I know it doesn't help but I'm glad I chose not to use the H100, and design a simple custom water-loop for my system. FYI, as part of the RMA Corsair may want you to ship your computer parts to them for inspection. I hope you get the necessary parts replaced and your PC is back up and running again soon.

corsair always replace every parts when there is a leak. not matter what, if it THEIR fault. you won't pay a penny

I don't know if this helps, and I don't know where you are, but Corsair has RMA centres in Fremont CA USA, Netherlands, and Taiwan. It would be good if you're closer to one of those and they wanted to see the damaged parts, that shipping to one of those hubs would be possible.

Contact Corsair. They are pretty awesome at this kind of stuff. A user who had his H50 leak on his board, soundcard, and GPU got 400 bucks out of them and a SSD along with a new H80. All as a "We are sorry, lets try to fix that" deal. Not sure if they will still do that still, but hey. see what happens. Corsair customer service = awesome!

Also, shoot a message to this guy:

He is the Corsair rep here on OCN. May be able to help out further.

Good luck!

Man that sucks, I had the swiftech H20 years ago leak on me and damage a GPU and mobo. This is why the first thing i did before putting the H100 in my system was leak test for 6hrs as i never trust any contained units anymore. I'm guessing you didn't do this though....which is a easy mistake to make in trusting a product as "plug and play" as i did with the swiftech, i'm not taking chances anymore.

Corsair will sort you out mate don't worry.

I just went thru the RMA process with Corsair for the grinding H100 block. Very very fast and great CS there. They should fix you up completely. Sorry to hear that. Damn it makes me want to check mine now.

Yeah i'm probably going to start periodically checking mine now. It's been running 3months solid but i'm not taking any chances....

One thing that does happen is oil getting on the inside rim of the fans, this is normal for those that see it. It's from the fan bearings....

Thanks Lord Xeb, I will give that a try if I don't hear back from them by tomorrow.

Thanks Mhill2029. No I didn't test it first. Obviously, I'm wishing I had and will do from now on. I was convinced by various reviews that I wouldn't have to worry about it leaking: "If you are looking for extreme cooling at a reasonable price, the Corsair H100 is a solid bet. We didn't have to worry about leaks or the fluid levels or any of that mess. " http://www.stereowiseplus.com/2012/06/corsair-h100-cpu-water-cooler-review-by.html

It seems to be very rare for this to happen though.
