Hey guys,

I just got my new Corsair RM850Watt powersupply in the mail. unpacked it, threw it in the computer with just one of my gtx 980s to start with. booted up just fine, played a little GTA 5 on it to make sure all was well. Seemed like everything was going fine, so I turned the computer off, plugged in my second gtx 980. pushed the power button, mobo screen appeared, all seemed fine, black screen like it normally does before windows boots, out of the corner of my eye I see an arc in the power supply and BANG!!!

Sounded like a freaking 9mm gun going off right next to me, made my ears ring, scared me half to death. I quickly unplugged the power supply and the pci express cables going to my 980s.

What the hell happened!?!

Took the corsair power supply out, put my old one back in, plugged everything in, tested everything including my 980s separatly. Everything seems to be unharmed, thank god. Unfortunatly its friday night at 8pm and Corsair's customer service will be closed till monday.

Holy [censored]. It sounds to me like you have a very defective PSU here and that one of the main (bigger) capacitors exploded. I don't know enough about PSUs to know WHY this happened though.

I recommend that you return this to the store you bought it from telling them that it's defective (the word "defective" is almost like a magic word). Just tell them that you want to return it and that you will spend some time shopping around for a different one. The new one that you buy should NOT be a Corsair PSU because almost all of their PSUs are overpriced simply due to the name "Corsair". These RM Series PSUs are almost the worst when it comes to how overpriced their PSUs are.

You got really a crappy one. I will strongly not recommend the corsair even the RM series for two GTX 980s. Your badluck that it exploded. Contact corsair and get the nonetheless back to get food PSU from XFX like XFX XTR or Seasonic or EVGA good model version for your PC.
Your. Badluck, that you got a faulty one and it can't handle the load of two GTX 980s. And BANG, it explodes. Not just some components or some capacitors may explode in such conditions.
And your soo Goodluck that you have all components working in that bloody disaster. You got your GTX 980 back which is a very good thing. Also it didn't fry your mobo.

Sounds like one of the CapXon caps went jihad and killed itself or something.

If you can get other then I will suggest you to get other model as I tell before. I would not get corsair again, if you can. Although, AXi is good but it is overpriced.

Is the AXi model a different, better OEM?

AXi is different and little better than RM but as shilka said, I would get other good PSU and she suggested you the EVGA G2 which is good. I would not get corsair again. If you don't have to chance to get other one by giving that bloody exploded Grenade, either keep it as extra or sell it. Shilka said already.

AXi is way better than the RM Series, but again, return your defective PSU to the store you bought it from. Say this, exactly, "It's defective". Ask for a refund. Don't let them swindle you into an exchange for another RM850.

Also, yes, the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 is a high-end PSU. However, will you be overclocking your GTX 980s? If so, then how far do you plan to overclock them? Will you increase their voltages? If so, then by how much?

I dont know if that video just isnt capturing the sound that those power supplies were really making or if those were just popping instead of exploding.

I am not exaggerating at all, it sounded like a hand gun going off. It didnt just pop, it freaking exploded.

I dont overclock anything anymore. The 20% increase in power consumption and head output, reduced system stability and the potential of frying the component isnt worth the 4% performance gain to me anymore.

I might push the OC Genie button on my motherboad, but I doubt ill even do that.

If you can get an AXi then do it, it is made by Flextronics and a much much better PSU. Even the regular AX is a huge jump up, which is made by Seasonic.

EVGA G2 is also really good in the event that they won't "upgrade" you to an AXi(which is more than likely going to be the case). Also depending where you shop the EVGA GS series(new lineup) is pretty much equally as good as the G2 and can be found cheaper depending on sales.

G2 made by Super Flower and GS is made by Seasonic

Then your power consumption while gaming with two GTX 980s and a 4770K would never exceed about 400-450W. So, please don't waste your money on an 850W PSU. It's just extremely unnecessary overkill that doesn't benefit you in any way unless you decide to overclock the living hell out of your GTX 980s. Y'know? These video cards at stock simply sip power (but they chug it very hard when they're overclocked heavily - NVIDIA is really impressing the socks off me with these cards).

Here's a PSU that we believe was made using the SeaSonic G Series:

The 550W EVGA GS Series: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-SuperNOVA-Modular-Supply-220-GS-0550-V1/dp/B00UVN20UO

It has 4 x 6+2-pin PCI-E connectors, and it's only $79.99 shipped. Or if you get it from Newegg, it's $79.99 shipped and you can get a $15 rebate card and $5 off using the Promo Code AFNJ1316 until the end of the business day on May 3rd.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438049

So, technically, it would be $59.99 shipped from Newegg (but, it's before tax - I know that you're in California. It's still cheaper than $79.99 shipped).

If you're not comfortable with a 550W PSU, then there's the 650W EVGA GS Series for $94.99 shipped: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-SuperNOVA-Modular-Supply-220-GS-0650-V1/dp/B00UVN20AO

Or there's the 650W SeaSonic G Series for $99.99 shipped: http://www.amazon.com/SeaSonic-650-Watt-CrossFire-Certified-SSR-650RM/dp/B00918N4A0 Again though, we believe that the EVGA GS Series was made using the SeaSonic G Series, so I wouldn't spend $5 more on the same PSU - especially since the EVGA GS Series is fully modular.

I appreciate the input and understand where you're coming from. But for the build I am currently doing, I wanted to keep it as quiet as possible, so I wanted a power supply that the fan will be off at idle, to do that I need to a higher wattage PSU so Im in the lower percentile current draw during gaming to keep the fan from coming on.

Unfortunatly, I bought this power supply entirely with gift cards to best buy that I got for my birthday, so whatever PSU I get, has to be one that best buy offers.

The 650W GS Series would provide that silence. You're not going to hear a 120mm fan spinning at slow speeds. My HX650's fan supposedly spins at 800 RPM while there's hardly any power being pulled from it, but I can't hear it - not even if I put my ear right next to it.

EVGA G2 PSUs has an eco mode switch that keeps the fan off at idle and low loads until a temperature threshold activates the fan. My 850 G2 has one.

Wow. $156.99 for the RM850. What the hell is Best Buy thinking?

Anyway, here's a much better 650W PSU for $100.24:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lepa-g650-mas-650w-crossfire-87plus-gold-certified-atx-12v-psu-black/1309723850.p?id=mp1309723850&skuId=1309723850

It will be just as quiet as you need it to be.

Or, here's a PSU that I'll sacrifice my comfort to recommend: the HX650.... for a disgustingly high price of $133.99: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-hx-series-hx650-power-supply-650-watt-80-plus-certified-modular-psu-black/1305634846.p?id=mp1305634846&skuId=1305634846

Maybe you should use those gift cards to get something else and buy a PSU from Amazon.com instead. Like, use them up on movies or something. Buy things that are more reasonably-priced with those gift cards.

that powersupply isnt sold by Best Buy, its " Sold & Shipped by: Buy.com ". On BestBuy's website, in the middle top of the page you need to click on " BestBuy Items ". Also, dont fret, I didnt pay $156.99 for the RM850, Best buy price matches amazon and I got it for $129.99.

I think Ill return it and get the EVGA G2 750

The EVGA GS series is based on the Seasonic G series.

The Seasonic G series maxed out at ~34dBA under 90-100% load. That is very quiet. The G2 is louder at high loads going into the 40s

I didn't know that gift cards couldn't be used in the Best Buy marketplace. That's why I left it that way.

Anyway, yeah, that's your best option with Best Buy's limited selection. Or, you could use those gift cards on something else and get a PSU from Amazon.com or other stores. That way, your options are unlimited.
