Delidding 3800 X2, 939

I have been toying with the idea of removing the IHS on my processor, so I'm looking for the best methods & any info for decapitating the 3800 X2 939. Any tips, best blade to use, tricks, depth of cut pertaining to this processor will be greatly appreciated. I just bought another Toledo core, & it runs a bit hotter on one core than my first one, so thinking this might be a good candidate for IHS removal, I'm a bit braver now that I have a spare, to chicken to try it when I only had 1.

I have a Zalman 9500 cooler, plan on using 4 spacers on the processor to give more support rather than trying to evenly balance the cooler, & planning on using a washer on top of the cooler & under the mounting bar to make up for the lost thickness of the lid.

Thanks in advance for any tips on this procedure

Just use any razor blade. Tape off anything greater than about 7/16" of the blade. If you slip and push too hard, you still shouldn't be able to hit anything. I believe the surface components are like 3/8" from the edge.

For Plenty of hints and tips just stay within this forum (AMD CPUs) and go to "search this thread" and enter:
Naked CPU
There are step by step tutorials of what to do, and even some of what NOT to do ( even more helpful!)
Cheers

I've decapitated a few of these. Nerve-wracking at first, but lots of fun! I've only destroyed one, not because of a cutting accident, but because an HSF slipped from my fingers during mounting and crushed one of the ICs surrounding the core die.

I'm at work right now, but I'll be glad to post pictures on this thread of the naked chip, as well as a technique I use to protect those itsy-bitsy ICs around the die.

(Actually, floating around these forums are those very same pictures. I wish I could remember what search terms might be best, but if I have time I'll search through my own posts and see if I can link you to them.)

Hehe, I totally didn't know about that!

Thanks for the heads up.

I've attached some pictures of a technique I now use whenever I take the lid off of a CPU. Basically I cut strips of electrical tape and place these around the core die. The tape goes over the teeny-tiny ICs surrounding the die, giving them a measure of protection with just enough padding to prevent them from getting crushed accidentally.

My gaming rig ("Darth Ominous") runs with this setup with absolutely no problems. The pictures shared here were taken using a spare Biostar TForce 6100-939 I use for basic testing, when I first tested this idea of using electrical tape as padding over the perimeter ICs.

Apologies for having the photos out of focus.
