I have xonar dx audio card but it doesn't have optical input so I plan to buy optical to 3.5mm converter head about 2 bucks on ebay to use with my optical cable. I just wonder if it can give me 5.1 surround sound? thanks.

I don't know if it works with a converter to optical, but lots of PC surround sound speakers use 3.5 mm plugs.

For 5.1 you need 3 3.5mm connectors. And I am 99% sure that an optical converter to 3.5mm should not be 2 bucks. It needs to be active...

Which card do you have?

Just about ALL 5.1 speakers for the PC have 3 .. 3.5mm connectors, to plug into 3 jacks on the sound card.
Can you provide a link to the speakers on the manufacturers website, and also link the manufacturer specs of the sound card?
This^

what about headsets? do they require the same connectors?

sorry to hijack but i have soundblaster audigy card and just bought audio technica ath ad700 headset

and to the OP i did read that most 5.1/7.1 etc surround is simulated and uses drivers to produce this sound. what i read also states that good stereo can equal the same surround(
dont hate its just what i read on here)

5.1 optical input? what is that?

I got the Xonar DX, and on the Mic in port, there is a red light where with an adapter that came with it, will support Optical output. in how many channels I dont know.

The card comes with an adapter that allows you to get 5.1

Use your video card's HDMI output?

Not quite sure about the cable though. so you need to research that part a bit more.

The standard 3.5mm jack will not. But if you are using a SPDIF cable which is TOSLINK, then the sound card sends out 5.1 in compressed form through that cable. Your receiver will then decompress the audio signal into 5.1.

The standard front audio 3.5mm jack at the back of the card will not compress the audio stream. This is why we have SPDIF. If you wanted 5.1 in loseless format (not compressed) then you would have to use HDMI but I don't think you care about that.

Cheers.

OK i think i get your point. However, I still have another card:

it doesn't have SPDIF output and the optical output doesn't give me exact 5.1 sound ( center speaker doesn't work whatsoever). Is there any converter that can convert other 3.5mm outputs to connect to either HDMI, SPDIF or optical on the receiver?
