Hi mate, off the top off my head the 4000 has a lower rpm, think it goes down to 5000rpm where as the 3000 goes to 10000 rpm, the lower speed on the 4000 is handy if you are working with acrylic. Otherwise I dont think there is much difference, comes down to personal choice.

According to Dremel's website, both the 3000 and the 4000 go down to 5000 RPM, the difference is in the max speed (32,000 for the 3000, 35,000 for the 4000)

If you can find the precursor (I think) to the 3000 anywhere (the 300) it has the same specs as the 4000 for about $30 less:

The 4000 comes with more accessories, though, so it is really up to you in what you think you'll need.

 

I have owned both of them. The big difference is the constant speed provided by the 4000. I'll give you a scenario to describe what I mean.

Using a 3000 if you are cutting a material, let's say kyrptonite ha, at 20k rpm and you apply pressure the 3000's rotation speed will begin to slow down to say 18k rpm.

Now let's say you are using a Dremel 4000 at 20k rpm and you are cutting your kryptonite once you apply pressure the dremel 4000 electronic feedback *WILL* kick in and make the 4000 continue to spin at approx. 20k.

That's the big difference. Is it worth it? Hard to say. I use mine a lot, like every day at work. So the 4000 is nice.

If you are just modding cases the 3000 will be more than adequate.

 

Just made my first windows cutting job with a brand new dremel 4000, i need to be honest and say this tool is very great. It was my first time using it, and yet i feel like a pro, You cant go wrong with the 4000.

+ the 3000 were the same price here @Canada anyway!

 

Just bought a 3000 for $50 at walmart...does the job!
