Graphics Card Fails to Be Detected

Well guys, sometimes my bottom graphics card fails to be recognized and run in SLi...

I only really notice when I am playing a game and then notice my FPS aren't where they are supposed to be so I reboot my machine and then sometimes I have to manually move around the 2nd graphics card or unplug it then plug it back in from the power supply and then it will be detected....

The 2nd graphics card fan IS spinning through, but it just doesn't get detected or something is going wrong....

Any thoughts on this??

It is VERY annoying!!!

Would you consider adding your power supply to your signature? Brand, model, wattage, etc?

...this can be related to part failures...

...this is why I ask...

Looks like I missed it. Power supply is definitely NOT the problem.

1) Have you researched stability issues with your BIOS?
2) What BIOS are you using?

This could most likely be resolved with a BIOS update. I had issues with DX10/11 games freezing and blacking out due to using the bottom PCIe slot for my SLI setup. A simple BIOS update later and I was problem free with a nice boost in performance as well.

Another thing to check is, if you are doing any overclocking, make sure you are absolutely stable.

Also, since you have an HX1000, just for giggles, see if switching your second GPU to the other 12V rail stabilizes things. Refer to the diagram in this thread:

I've updated the BIOS to the latest version - no luck
I've updated to the latest graphics drivers - no luck

I swapped the 2 power supply connectors from graphics card 1 to graphics card 2, still doesnt really work...

The only way to fix this seems to be to remove the graphics card and put it back in.... Or unplug the power (from graphics card) and plug it back in, probably also moving it a little

What is going on???

...didnt see an indication you ran it alone, but that aside if it works fine I would look at a driver issue, I know you tried current ones...but I would go into safe mode use driver sweeper to remove the reinstall...if that fails try an older version, I had some issues with drivers on a non sli system that this fixed

1. Are you using PCIe slot 1 and slot 2? (not slot 1 and slot 3)
2. Try each card, one at a time, on slot 2 and see if that card can function properly in that slot

Hmmm... when you say it is not detected until you reseat the power connectors and/or card, do you mean it doesn't even show you have two cards, or it doesn't detect that is can be run in SLI? If it is the latter, try a different SLI bridge. If the former, it might be a bad PCIe slot, which you may be able to confirm by moving it to the other PCIe slot. If that doesn't work then it may be that you may have a bad board.

I would want to move my 2nd card to the bottom PCIe slot, with my case (HAF932), there is no open slot in the back to extract the airflow from the card.. It would be blocking the bottom part of the card, which is the airflow...

It could be your second PCI-e slot that is failing. It happened to my MSI board that I owned. Pfft, overly pissed.

Well I took out both cards tried them in the first PCIe slot standing alone, they both work fine I ran the free version of 3DMark11 on both cards

When I threw the 2nd one back in the 2nd PCIe slot after testing it alone, It showed up in my system, I ran the 3dMark11, but no FPS increase really. Should I see the FPS's doubled seeing theres 2 cards now running in SLi?

Here is my graphics card properties is this the only thing I need to change to get the most out of the 2 cards?

Since it shows that SLI is enabled, I would suggest running actual games to see if there is any tangible difference. 3DMark 11 has been hit or miss for a good number of people, including myself. I have only been able to complete the benchmark once successfully - all other times it fails somewhere along the lines. Games, on the other hand, have shown a remarkable difference with a second card installed.

OKAY, I was watching video's on youtube and all of a sudden my computer froze up.....

I hit the restart on my machine. Once I logged in, the welcome screen went all pixelated and all different colors, the computer restarted and did that like twice...

Next I decided to play black ops, the game looks all weird, it has a red hue to the game.... what do you think is going on?

Is one of the cards dieing?

I have had this system for only a few months and one of the cards is already on its way out?

ok this is weird because the same exact thing happened to me today.

I tried out those new 236.14 drivers yesterday and had some weird things happen to I did a driver sweep and went back to 260.99 but today I went to play BFBC2 vietnam and I hung up on a loading screen like 3 times causing me to have to hit the restart button.

After restarting that last time only 1 gpu was recognized, I was like oh no, maybe a video card died. So I swapped them and put the bottom one in the top slot. The bottom one wasn't even warm and the the top one was, like oh man dead, so anyway it worked in the top spot???? ***??? So I cleared the cmos and booted up stock (1st thing to try) and same thing.

So thinking that my mobo may be shot, I decide to take it apart, re-seat my cpu cooler and build it on the desk. I do that and everything seems to work fine??? but then I enable SLI (which I never disabled so that was weird) and my image quality is terrible on text, could tell immediately. So I reinstall the driver and enablle/disable/enable SLI and bam back to good.

I rebuilt my pc back into my case, re-did my OC and have played all my games and done a few benchmarks with no problem.

Not sure wth happened but I did get some weird action after installing that 263.14 driver.

after you saying that, make sure your SLI bridge is on all they way. If it is, do a clean reinstall of your drivers.

Well I uninstalled the 260.99 drivers and installed the 260.89 drivers and did a few restarts. The SLi is detected and the games have no more red hue... I'm not sure what is going on, but I'm sure that once I live the computer off for a day or two the SLi configuration will fail to be detected once again.....

That is definitely weird. At this point, I would test out each card individually by running 40-50 passes of Crysis benchmark and/or Metro 2033 benchmark looped. You can also opt to try Furmark/Kombuster/OC Scanner/OCCT as well, as those may help you find out more quickly which card may have problems.

I don't know if you have any overclock going on with your CPU, but I would suggest reverting back to stock for your GPU stability testing. As a matter of fact, if you do have a CPU overclock, trying running it at stock for a few days just to see if that may be the issue as well.
