Hey guys... I'm about to head back to college and I want to transfer my saved game in GTA IV from my desktop to my laptop. Google didnt turn anything up, neither did a search for anything titled "save" in the game folder. any help?

If you saved the game on an offline account, it is possible to transfer the data over. The save game folder is at

C:\\Documents and Settings\\USER(your user name folder)\\Local Settings\\Application Data\\Rockstar Games\\GTA IV\\savegames

You need to save the entire user_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx folder (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the number part, it's different on every comp). Rename the old save folder (from your desktop) to the same name as your new save folder (on your laptop). Then paste the desktop's save folder over the laptop's save. Now the game should recognize the save game.

Doesn't work. GTA will says it's either corrupt or "cannot load". The "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" is randomly whenever you create a "Live!" offline/online account. And making a new user with same name will not make the same numbers/letters. This is a huge failure, I hate Live! GFW. If you have a online account, the saves should auto download from MS server.

You're making a new offline account on a new comp first. Then close the game. Now look in the game directory, it'll have a user_xxxxxxxxxxxxxx folder, copy that folder's name, then rename your old game save folder to that name. Now copy your old (but renamed) game save folder over your new game save folder. Now load the game.

It worked for me.

hey,

I had this problem myself. I re-installed windows and tried to put my backed up save games in there that didnt work. so ill write this walkthrough to explain how i did it.

The reason it doesnt work is because of a protection in 'games for windows live' that doesnt allow saves from other accounts to be loaded (for whatever reason microsoft got into their pathetic heads)

There is a crack that exists that removes this protection.

Instructions:

1. Copy the files, SGTA4xx, from the folder "C:\\Users\\XXXXX\\AppData\\Local\\Rockstar Games\\GTA IV\\savegames\\user_xxxxxxxxxxxxxx\\" (for vista) or "C:\\Documents and Setting\\XXXX\\Application Data\\Local\\Rockstar Games\\GTA IV\\savegames\\user_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\\ (XP) on your old installation to a safe place.
*NOTE, make sure u have 'show hidden files and folders' checked in Tools>Folder options>View

2. Go to your new installation and create a new Games for Windows live offline account.

3. Download XLive Wrapper from:
http://blog.gib.me/wp-content/upload...apper_1207.zip
(this is for the new version of GTA4 so install the patch first)

4. Read the instructions, then install Xlive Wrapper.

5. Copy the old saved game files and put them under the new installation "C:\\Users\\XXXXX\\AppData\\Local\\Rockstar Games\\GTA IV\\savegames\\user_xxxxxxxxxxxxxx\\" folder.

6. Run the game, cross your fingues and try to load the saved games. (should work) if it didnt, try re-installing Xlive Wrapper.

Hope it helped.
