Headphones shock me and the computer!

Hey ya'll, first time posting in this board and I have a problem...

http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser...dphones_502765

I own these headphones above and recently I've had the problem of them..shocking me when I pick them up. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, who cares, it's just static! But when they do shock me, they happen to make my computer go black, the case and CPU fan rev up quite a bit extra than normal, and I can't do anything! Forcing me to hard restart, they are plugged into the front of the case via an extension...would using the back audio help?
Please reply!

PS: Just to note, it's the metal ring around the cups that jolts me! It's like a Pikachu DX!

what type of material is your chair made out of? This sounds like your building static electricity up from your chair and it discharges on your phones because of the ground. I don't think it is coming FROM your phones.
What you can try and do is take some clear fingernail polish and put a good thick coat on the metal ring of the headset, or even better, go to a hardware store and buy a can of liquid rubber, it is used on tool handles to stop electrical conduction, and put that on the metal part.
Whatever you do, just be aware that your PC will only take so much of this before it takes a dump on you. You have been lucky so far that all you had to do was a hard reboot and it all worked fine again. But too much more of this and you are going to turn it into a fancy paperweight.

Oh I must have worded my OP wrong..what am I meaning to say is...How can I make them not shock my computer? I am aware that the phones are not the problem. This only happens when I wear socks for example. I know I am supposed to be naturally shocked, but is the computer supposed to be? And it supposed to lock up?

WHen you touch your headphones, they become a conductor, you ground yourself through them and your PC because PC is already grounded through an electrical outlet. Basically they serve as grounding rod. People can generate static charge by wearing socks or even rubber flipflops and walking on synthetic carpeting. Is there a carpet in your room? And is the air below normal humidity? because very dry air, especially in the winter when it's produced by a furnace, could trigger this effect.

My whole room is carpet. I guess the only solution until these headphones die is to make sure not to be stupid and hug my desk every time I sit down lol.

I think your computer wil die first... headfone coils (if even touched) can handle the spikes. Your PC has the sensitive components that won't. If I were you, I would run a copper wire from any waterline in the hose to your desk, and touch it or even attach it to yourself while using the PC. That would get rid of the problem permanently, because you would bypass that charge with the wire to water plumbing to ground outside your place. And while capable of producing charges, have some fun with it. take a multitester, set it to AC voltage reading at 1000v, hold one end the probe at the tip, and touch another end to a faucet or anything well grounded. I had this problem while living infully carpeted appartment, and I was able to generate spark at 300+ volts. believe me, it's fun!

You probably just have a lot of chi built up and it's starting to manifest itself externally. I would do 5-10 kameha-meha's every day to release some of that energy until you learn to control it.

Or buy headphones that don't have those rings!

Anyone recommend some headphones in the same price range as HD428s? 70-$80?

it wont help, you will still generate that charge. =D and if you want good headphones go for Plantronics GameComm 777, they just released the 7.1 version.

If you don't have anything useful to say don't say it at all.

Is your PC grounded? it should be or else if it aint grounded, thats why its happening. Usually if you have static it discharges to ground, but if the ground is missing then you will get shocked

Aren't they a headset? I was recommended never to buy a headset and just use a headphone/desktop mic combo lol

EDIT: I'm assuming my PC is grounded..it has an IO shield..on the floor...etc.

your PC is grounded by the outlet. Do you have a 2 to 3 prong adapter being used from the wall to surge protector or PC?

some older homes (like my parents) still have 2 pronged outlets and have no ground.

I dont know who told you that. they sound great, the boom mic you can hide comepletely if you want to take them with you on the bus. and 6 of my friends bought them and the mic sound like a studio profesional mic and doesn't pick up any background noises. give them a chance and you'll find yourself a new friend.

I suppose though. People generally told me that because headsets have to carry a mic and audio they usually lack in quality compared to regular headphones.

Can anyone recommend a good sound card in the $70 range as well for The Gamecons? PCI preferably.
