When AMD launched their Radeon HD 6800 range in October a number of manufacturers took the base 6850 design and applied their own cooler or PCB to make those models stand out from the rest. Soon after there was an initial batch of overclocked models which basically took handpicked chips and overclocked them and while this does create a faster product it doesn't necessarily make it any different to a consumer buying a reference clocked card and manually increasing the clocks.

Sapphire rarely does anything half-heartedly though and the focus of today's review is their take on an enhanced 6850. This is more than just a new cooler and factory overclock though as they have completely changed the product to enhance its performance and overclocking potential. Read on to find out how it performs in real world gameplay with the latest games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, F1 2010 (DX11 patch) and Medal of Honor. Of course our usual content is also covered including 5760x1080 testing (with videos and screenshots), Blu-Ray 3D playback, AMD HD3D gameplay, GPU computing and a section on just how far we could push the Toxic.

Sexy looking cooler IMO!!

Summary:
-Enhanced PCB; should allow voltage tweak through TriXX
-HH managed to OC to 1.2ghz memory and 1 ghz core
-peak power at 244w
-Quieter than reference cooler

I came here because I heard there was pie.

OT: Impressive results, loving these new cards. Nothing overly exciting for me to replace my watercooled 5970 though. Will be waiting for the 7k series before investing again.

That's total system power, not the card's peak power.

The OC is only slightly above average for that voltage, however the cooler might be worth it.

So what kind of price are we talking here.

I know.... I don't get it either. Furthermore, I'm even LESS interested in this now that I see those clocks and temps... I got lower temps and similar clocks on the stock Gigabyte cooler on my 6850. Save you money, grab a Gigabyte instead, it was very quiet... only barely above my case fans on full blast.

Agreed... My Gigabyte 6850 gets much better temps and noise levels than this card. Plus, the Sapphire 6850 has hit $199 on Newegg, so I suspect the Toxic won't be any less than $210 for a cooler that's worse than the Gigabyte one. The only advantage I see to the Toxic so far is the extra 6 pin power connector which might be nice for overclocking (assuming the barely-better-than-stock cooler doesn't hold you back).

I know, I know. I was looking forward to getting the reference 6850s but they never released. I'm glad I did not because the reference coolers on the 50's did not cool the memory at all. This 6850 setup does. I'll be happy with what I bought but I spent a bit more than what these would have cost. Oh well. They do look good though.

What's the price on these in the US?

Even OC'd it juusst meets the 6870.

You can get a 6870 for around $240, so if this isn't $199-210 it's really not a deal at all. Not to mention the 6870 will OC and perform even better.

Yup, I got mine for $179 so it's an even better deal (for me). I don't think the extra power plug really makes a difference because, even at 1.4v and 1100 core mine doesn't have a power issue.

I usually love the design of the Vapor-X cards, but not this one. That's why I stick with Asus. When are they going to start designing cards that look like they were designed by adults, for adults, and not something that looks like it came from a crackerjack box.
