Chennai: A three-month-boy bursts into flames whenever he sweats. The child has been suffering from a rare medical condition called Spontaneous Human Combustion. Doctors, however, said there was no cure for this rare condition and could be a result of his skin emitting combustible gases.

Rahul first caught fire when he was only 9-day-old and it had happened at least 3 more times since then.

Dr Thenmozhi, Assistant Professor in Paediatrics Department, Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital said this was the first time that he has come across such a case. "It's a very rare case, it can occur in any age group. It is the spontaneous explosion of burning material from the sweat......

I've always heard of stuff like this happening, but always summed it up to being folklore. I had no idea that spontaneous human combustion actually existed... =O
If this is something that does not belong here, please feel free to move it. I just find this very much science at work, trying to figure out what causes this as there is no cure.

This is the perfect scenario for an episode of Heroes. Loved that show

This was about the first thing to come to mind for me as well. Hell even if its true that there is combustible gases coming off the baby there still needs to be an ignition source. Hair spray is very flammable and you don't see it catching fire on its own.

I am Indian and I would like to warn you that the majority of stories on Indian news channels are simply there to create a sensation. They hardly ever verify what's really going on. All they care about is having a headline that will attract attention and drive up viewership. This will be proven to be wrong just like hundreds of other similar stories have.
I would not put it beyond the news channel to have actually thought up the whole story, and paid the parents of the child to play along.

Really, it is that bad over there with things like this? I never would have thought so. Well if this is the case then I suppose it should just be moved to the rumors/unconfirmed section then huh?

Oh yes.

I remember about 5 years ago there was another "sensational" story about a man who could create a combustible by boiling some leaves in a pan. After a week or two of news coverage and rumours of million-rupee offers to buy his technique it was revealed that his pan had a false bottom filled with kerosene which would leak out and float on top of the water.

The last thing these news channels care about is news. They are in the game to make money, by any means. That said, there are a few channels that are not so bad.

A waitress at my old job once told us she only "goes #2" once a month. Told her she was full of it.
