Intel plans to revise its current product naming system on January 1, 2008, in order to eliminate a great deal of confusion and simplify things for consumers. Under the new plan, Intel Viiv Processor Technology and Intel vPro Processor Technology will now be known as Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with Viiv (or vPro) respectively. Naming distinctions based on cores are also being eliminatedâ€"Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo, and Core 2 Solo will all revert back to Core 2 Processor.

I, for one, welcome a simpler naming system. If you want more info, hardware geeks can always look up the name and read the fineprint. But keep it simple like the good old days of "Pentium II 300" or "Pentium III 1000", where you know that a the second one is better because 1000 > 300. But nowadays, you have odd situations like the Q6600 being better than the E6750, and roughly equivalent to the E6850... even though 6600 < 6750. At least with AMD, you know the 6000+ is faster than say, the 5200+.

they should just keep the naming scheme really...i hate the new Phenom ge-5600 etc. if they were gonna change the names, then at lesat make it look attractive, i know that a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ was attractive to me cause the name looks really nice... i dont want to see something that may be short but looks stupid like AMD BE-2350..*** is that?! if it were AMD Phenom 64 X2 3800+ that would attract me more than AMD Phenom GS-4600

intel's naming for the core 2 duo series are really good, why would they change it?

How is it confusing? Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad...

It's pretty much the most self-explanatory naming system next to Athlon, Athlon X2 and future Phenom X2/X4

They all work. And making it easier for noobs won't really make it any easier because they still might have no idea what a CPU is...

Imagine in a few years, when Core Duos become the entry-level "minimum required" processor. The Sims 3 is released, and on the back of the box, the listed system requirements are:

"An Intel dual-core processor running at 2.4GHz, an Intel quad-core processor running at 1.6GHz, a 3000-series Intel Xeon, an AMD dual-core Windsor-class 5600+, an AMD Opteron-class running at 2.4GHz, a first generation Barcelona AMD quad-core, or better."

If some casual gamer sees something like this, he isn't going to buy the Sims 3 for PC. He's going to pick up the PS3 version. And that's not good for the PC industry.
