So I've been looking into quite a few boards for a couple of builds that I'm doing. One thing that I notice varies a lot is the Lan controllers. Is there really much of a difference and is that something that I should use in my decision making processes? I understand that the Intel controller is supposed to be better, but how much of a difference are we talking about?

It depends on what you will be doing with the builds. I hear that intel is much better for virtual environments. Realtek seems to be a more consumer oriented variety (not that it wouldn't work) and I just don't know much about broadcom other than that they make more wireless controllers than the others.

There won't be any discernible difference for basic everyday use. The only difference I can think of a normal user might come across is driver support in non-Windows operating systems.
