Is a 5090 FE unusable with a CPU air cooler?

I have a question about 5090 FE in a CPU air cooler

The ambient temperatures here are around 29 degrees and I have a Noctua NH U12A air cooler. I have a Fractal Torrent PC case with 2 180mm fans at the front intake and 3 140mm fans on the bottom again as intake.

The 5090 FE will seem positively tiny in this case but its only selling point for me is MSRP pricing. Problem is it exhausts hot air right into the CPU cooler and my 7800x3d already runs at 75-80 in CPU intensive games and around 60-70 in most games with an 4090 AIB currently.

Considering my case design, is a 5090 FE workable with a CPU air cooler? Or should I just pay the $800 premium for an AIB?

I dont want to go the liquid cooling route as the case isnt designed around it

The problem is proximity and you fixing the airflow by worsening it. GG
Also, most GPUs nowdays come with thermal putty. Thermal paste is bad because it gets pumped out, and in a 5090 it's gonna happen in 15min.

OP.
You cant fix it in that case. You need a case that can fit an AIO, preferably not as an exhaust. The torrent is an awesome case, but this is the issue with standard current PC layout. When power is too high, you run into this problem, because there's too many airflow paths.
That GPU is scorching everything that's close, no matter how much airflow you throw at your build.
If you don't wanna do it, I suggest 2x80mm fans over the ram at 45 degrees. That's gonna hit the whole upper area above the GPU plate, and more importantly the lower part of the CPU cooler that has no airflow path going in, because is blocked by the RAM. It might alleviate things a bit, but don't expect miracles, especially on a torrent where airflow is as good as it gets, and especially with such a low power CPU.

That being said the 7800x3d is a very warm CPU aswell. So that doesn't help either..... There's AMD design for you. Hopefully, in future iterations we get more control on the CPU boost behavior, although the 7800x3d has a hardware design issue, not a config issue like most other ryzens.

I can’t tell what case you have which makes things difficult. The big worry I think is “will it fit?” What case do you have? Other than that the only issue I see is getting all the heat out of the case, which can usually easily enough be done with sufficiently powerful fans. Those fans may be loud though. This may become the issue. I doubt very much you will need something like a “blowymatron” type fan, but they are available if needed. I think the ”blowymatron” was actually a delta industrial case fan. It’s definitely doable though it may not be super quiet.. remember air ignores gravity in the presence of running fans. They’re so much more powerful that it might as well not exist.

Bloweymatron was indeed a 50w(?) or so 80mm finger remover delta fan

you may need to segregate it a bit with a piece of paper or cardboard or something (if you could care less about internal aesthetics). If that sort of thing is important in this build there are lots of materials that are airproof.

I have a 5090FE, and you really need a large case, and good fans for best results! The hot air is not an issue at all. It won’t heat soak my case at all. The card can dump wattage, and my top case fans, and rear exhaust fan pull all of the hot air right out.

Big boy case+Good fans! This is the way.

Even though my 5090 FE is in RMA due to being faulty (possible RT cores) I did test it for a bit on the rig you can see in my signature. AP201, which is pretty tight and small with a 7800x3d and honestly, it ran just fine. Super silent (compared to my old gainward 4090 which is disgustingly loud), good temps (mainly if UV + OC to keep perf). Already have 2 top fans exhausting anyway, Air coming in from rear of the case to the CPU. Made no difference in overall temps.
