Looking to upgrade from i5- 2500k

Hi,

So my trust ol' 2500k and 8GB ram (mix of old 2gb sticks) has really started showing its age lately.
My usage has changed quite a bit since 2012 (just gaming) to nowadays:

Engineering (3D CAD, Simulations)
Programming (Android studio)
Gaming (CS, PUBG, Apex, etc.)
Multitasking (im the guy with 45 chrome tabs open)

So for now all I plan to purchase is the CPU/MOBO/RAM and re-use my case/PSU/SSDs/GPU (GTX 1060)

Im thinking of getting 16GB RAM to start and then add 8GB up to 24GB then 32GB as required. Or should I start at 24GB?
My plan is to also keep this CPU for quite a long time but update my GPUs more frequently (just got the 1060 from a 6950 recently)

So far I'm trying to decide between a few different choices being 9600k, 8700k, 9700k and Ryzen 2700x
I know its hard to say which is best without giving you a budget but I'm more wondering if the increase in price is worth the improved performance

EDIT: I currently have 3x 1080p 60Hz monitors which I plan to sell and upgrade to 2x 1440p 144Hz monitors in the near future

I would wait for Zen2 but If you must not Ryzen is your go to. Even 2700X is going to be a massive upgrade. 2x more core, 4x more threads. Get 16gb now and then add 16gb latter.

The gpu will struggle when you move up to 1440. Just wait a few more weeks for the Ryzen 3000, sell the 1060, and get a 1660Ti or something faster.

For the best performance for what you use your computer for (particularly 3D cad and simulations), I recommend Ryzen. You'll benefit from the superior multithreaded performance. Not only that, but you'll be ready for the Ryzen 3000 CPUs, like the 3600X.

If gaming were the most demanding thing you were doing, then I'd be recommending Intel, namely the 8700K.

You really can't go wrong either way though. Both upgrade paths would lead you to an enormous upgrade.

If you do wait for the 3000 series there should be a nice discount on the older models. Memory is also dirty cheap atm, so if it fits the budget, i'd go more than 16gigs.

45 Tabs only? I have over a 100 running in FF and Opera on my little 15W laptop CPU.

Definitely wait for Zen2 and then decide what to get as AMD will release Zen2 and the 3xxx series really soon.

Yeah, I'd also wait for zen2. Should be here in 1 or 2 months.
