My friends and I have started getting this error message recently in Modern Warfare 2. I've found that it only happens when the person is chosen as host for the next match. Also, sometimes when the person is chosen for host, it will act like it's about to time out, but will recover after about 30 seconds or so.

We have different ISPs, so it's not the ISP randomly blocking a P2P port or something. This just started happening about a week ago. Before then, I'd never seen this problem before, so that makes me think a patch started it. We're all on windows 7 x64, and from what I've read, MW2 and 7 aren't fully compatible, so that could also be causing some glitches.

Any help/ideas?

Unlike people who don't like to help at all and just post random things, I will try to help.

This error has happened for me on MW2 and MW. It was fixed by plugging in a Mic or making sure your Stereo Mix is enabled.

You can try this by:

Right click your volume icon in taskbar.
Click "Recording Devices"
In the blank space, right click and make sure the following is checked:
- Show Disabled Devices
- Show Disconnected Devices
Then enable the Stereo Mix option.

This most likely will help, but it is not the only solution but it's the most common.

Thanks for the response halifax. I right clicked and checked both "disabled" and "disconnected", but I still can't see the Stereo Mix option. Would it have something to do with me using a USB headset instead of normal 3.5mm audio plugs?

Maybe thats the problem. If you find a 3.5mm headset.

Yeah i have the same issue. When i get selected as host for a game in MW2, I can host flawlessly the first time around, and since its MW2 and if you stay in the same lobby, you're automatically picked for host for the following games. When I'm host and start the second game, i can load the map fine, but once it goes to "Awaiting Challenge...2" it freezes and says iw4mp.exe has stopped working. I'm on Win 7 x64 as well.

i just got this like an hour ago for the first time, and I also had just been chosen as the host

also has anyone noticed a bunch of games never starting?? the map loads, and then it awaits connection and eventually the game lobby is closed, this just started happening to me last night and happens maybe once an hour?

New member here with the same problem. I host most of the time with my 20/5 fiber connection and 4Ghz quad and SSD. First map goes fine. Then loads second map loads and gets to awaiting challenge 2 then poof iw4mp.exe has stopped working. I have made absolutely zero changes to this computer. I use auzentech forte soundcard with audio technica AD700 headphones and audio technica mic. I dont have stereo mixer that I can find?

kind of interesting MW2 program name is the same as COD4, iw4mp..hmmm

Go into your steam folder delete the iw4mp.exe and the mp_playlists.ff file in zone/english folder then open steam right click on mw icon go to properties local files verify integrity and voila problem solved.

I had the same issue after the update and i tried settin r_gpuSync to 0 didn't fix it however deleting those files and verifying integrity worked.

THIS IS IT!! FOR REALS!!

There are two files, in your steam folder:

mp_playlists_dlc1.ff
mp_playlists.ff

If you change these to:

mp_playlists_dlc.ff (take the '1' off the end)
mp_playlist.ff (take the 's' off the end)

This worked for me, where updating drivers, reinstalling and anything else I could think of wouldn't. Hope this helps, it took me a few days to figure it out
