So I was using a 1920x1080 144hz monitor my entire life and I decided to order the Dell S2721DGF which just arrived. I plugged it all in but I'm unsure what to do now, what is the best way to test/setup the monitor so the colours look good?
The monitor looks very pale unless I ramp the digital vibrant in control panel to 65%. Is this a good idea? I feel like my eyes are squinting trying to read text, is this normal trying to adjust to a new monitor? Just from typing this my eyes are squinting to read what I'm typing.

It's a Dell gaming monitor. You can't make it look good. Send it back.

They leave out gamma settings from their gaming monitors on purpose, while being too lazy to calibrate them to 2.2 gamma (or again purposefully make the monitors extra pale to reveal enemies in shadows).

Yeah this will cost, and then you're restricted to windows' color profile ability to retain these calibrations in programs. Not all games will accept calibration profiles for example.

You'll save money and nerves by just sending the monitor back to where it came from

Make sure HDR is off. That will wash out the colors on the desktop. And you're probably noticing that the text is smaller because you've had a bump in resolution.

Gets a relatively good writeup on RTings overall. Your problem is probably down to the colour calibration, as well as the scaling within Windows.

"Unfortunately, there are some noticeable issues out-of-the-box. There are noticeable inaccuracies in brighter shades of gray, and most colors aren't displayed accurately. On the other hand, gamma follows the sRGB target curve, and only some darker scenes are displayed a bit darker than they should be. "

Clearly the colours are pretty bad out the box, so try the RTings calibration settings (although colours on different units vary):
  • Picture Mode: Custom Color
  • Luminance: 101 cd/m²
  • Luminance Settings: 29
  • Contrast Setting: 77
  • RGB Controls: 95-94-100
  • Color Temperature: 6510 K
  • White Balance dE: 0.56
  • Color dE: 0.38
  • Gamma: 2.18
These settings are for the monitor OSD, not within Windows.

For small text/Windows small in general, increase the scaling incrementally to find the sweet spot for you. You can do this through right click desktop > display settings > scale and layout. At 27" 1440p, I find that 108% is the best scaling setting for me personally.
