A GROUP that advocates "curing" gays of same-sex attractions says its iPhone application has been yanked from Apple's online iTunes shop.

"Apple made a wise and responsible decision to dump an offensive app that demonised gay and lesbian people," Mr Besen said.
I really don't think it should have been there in the first place considering Apple
didn't allow lots of others to be in it....

What next? Pull out podcasts for shows like "Straight Plan for the Gay Man"?

"Ultimately, this issue comes down to what we, as a culture, believe about equality and the freedom to express our beliefs," Mr Chambers said.

While I'm not on either side of the fence on this one, I find it interesting hearing him talk of beliefs when that's exactly what this Exodus group was expressing were they not?

It would appear not all beliefs are equal. And if yours is not a part of popular culture then it is inherently incorrect.

I'm for freedom of speech, even if I don't agree with these people. But it's Apple's App Store, they can have whatever apps they like.

They would lose all their customers

That's fair enough. Looks like a useless app and as many have said, it is their app store, they can do what they like.

This is a legitimate thing to do +rep apple on this one . you're freedom of speech and where others begin . by using this types of things you effectively go against the right for gays to live the way they are living and having the freedom of being together without having to cope with hate and persecution . Only fools would say different and I pity the fools...

like a great humorist one said here .

I RESPECT YOU BECAUSE YOU DON'T SMOKE . SO RESPECT ME BECAUSE I SMOKE

it's like saying

I RESPECT YOU BECAUSE YOU DON'T SLAP ME IN THE FACE. SO RESPECT ME BECAUSE I SLAP YOU IN THE FACE.

Guess its nothing new though.
The problem is that many gay people don't like it, and I'm guessing plenty of gay people own Apple computers... If I were Apple, I probably would of pulled it also.

Perhaps terminology is the big issue here. To use gay 'cure' signifies being gay is a disease...

I think that perhaps the apps designer should of been a bit more PC with it's title.

Not something like that... it's quite offending. Some don't care, some do.. I do.

I think it will make people think bad of gay people, more bad than most people do already.. Think that we're some ****ed up things that just need to be made straight..

That wasn't the name of the app, that's just what the media is calling it in their headlines...

Anyway, stupid app, but I don't see the harm in it. The only idiots stupid enought to download it would be the people who already believe that "gay" is a disease that can be cured. When you're preaching to the choir, who's getting hurt?

the app wasn't directly hateful towards Gay people though, it was expressing a religious belief. Prior to removal the app has received... +4 approval or something from apple. Checking out the Exodus Website, it is not filled with hate speech. People take offence to difference of opinions, mainly (i think) to how they interpret that. Sort of like observation statements vs value statements

Think
me -
"Honey you burnt the rice"
how she receives it
"you are a terrible cook"

People that have homosexual leanings & feel guilty about having those leaning. They have decided that for whatever reason that a homosexual lifestyle is not for them. Its people that feel this way that this (i think) app sought to target.

So somebody admitting to be homosexual and not wanting to be homosexual and someone else wanting to assist them in this is wrong. Whereas someone else telling individual to embrace it is not wrong.

Who is "right" and who is "not right" in the above example?

Also keep in mind that I am not suggesting that any of my examples came across as homophobic or hateful or condemning in the above examples.

I get the feeling that this thread is going to degenerate into a religious debate & flame war.

~sigh~

Isn't Apple itself discriminating against my beliefs if I am anti homosexuality?

Things like anti-discrimination and tolerance are paradoxes. For instance, pushing tolerance inherently shows intolerance for the intolerant. Intolerance can never be eliminated without creating further intolerance in the process.

Apple merely traded politically incorrect intolerance, for politically correct intolerance.

Whoa, that's psychotic, but logically correct. The only way to be is completely neutral, brother.
