RTX4090 and boot loop

Hi all,
I have a Corsair HX1200i and an MSI Suprim X RTX 4090.
PC works well until I have no nvidia driver, as soon as I install nvidia driver the PC reboots abruptly,
then windows starts, shows the desktop and reboot, this happen in a loop.
If I uninstall nvidia drivers PC works well.

Is my HX1200i faulty?

If I rollback to an RTX2080Ti I don't have this problem.

how can I check if my PSU is tripping some protection?

Manuel from NVIDIA joined the thread.
here is post.

My name is Manuel and I work for NVIDIA. I have not received any driver feedbacks for this issue so I will need to ask our team to look into this. Can you do the following please?

1. Fill out the driver feedback form and if possible, include what troubleshooting steps you have attempted so far:

2. Following the FAQ below to allow your PC to capture a complete memory dump file. My guess is that the PC is rebooting so fast that it never gets a chance to write a complete memory dump file but it would be helpful if it does. If it does save a Windows complete memory dump file, please upload it to a file sharing service such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive and email me a link to download the file to driverfeedback@nvidia.com.

Thank you.

So, two broad possibilities-
  • The GPU is asking something of the PSU that it can't deliver - points to a broken PSU in some fashion, and not necessarily one that the 2080 Ti would expose
  • The GPU has an issue; evidence points to this, but you can't really eliminate either without having a replacement for each
I'd expect that if you could find a PSU that has four eight-pin outputs, that'd be quicker than troubleshooting the GPU. Do recommend talking to both MSI and Corsair to see if it's something either is aware of.

Another option is that the driver doesn't like some configuration or other of your install. Possible, I've had it happen in the past with soundcards. The easiest check is pull your OS drive, grab a low capacity spare and do a clean install. If that works without problems... there's your answer. Next I'd check the PSU, but only because I've replaced every single part of a system before now because the PSU tester said the PSU was good, when it wasn't.

I tried a fresh windows install and same problem

You have the worst luck. :(

I tried both the Corsair cables and the splitter bundled with the GPU and same problem.

Just got the 4090 Aorus Master and same issue. I tried first with the new Thermaltake GF3 which has the 12VHPWR connector and no dice. So tried the PCI-E ports instead, same issue. I swapped back to a Corsair RM1000x, same issue.

12900K + Z690 Hero.

Screen goes to desktop and after ~5s no signal and boot loop. I would say one curious thing is that I saw the BSOD once and it came up with 'Stop Code VIDEO TDR FAILURE'. I've opened up an RMA request already but I wonder if somethings conflicting that's causing this? DDU the driver and it functions but as soon as I install the game ready or studio driver it starts boot looping.

Any thoughts of things I should try outside of accepting the card is dead?

Hi my friend, I will try to share every things I find that it would help, please do the same and keep us posted if you find a solution.

I bought a new 1500W PSU just to try if that is the problem, it will arrive tomorrow.

At this point I don't think that we have bad cards, it could be somewhat related to what is happening to X670 users. They received a bios update for a problem like this.

Using a riser cable? And very important, latest bios installed?

I am running an Asus TUF OC 4090 on a Z690 Hero with no problems. My PSU is an EVGA Supernova 1600 T2 and I am using the supplied 4x8-pin adapter that came with video card.

This evening I tried the card on my brother's PC, he has an Asus Z690 Hero,
it works like a charm on his PC. This means that the card isn't bad.

At this point I really don't know where is the problem.

Tomorrow I'll try a brand new 1500W power supply but I doubt that it's the power supply because the power supply I'm using on my pc is am HX1200i that works well with a 2080ti.

I am far from stock, I am boosting to 5.6ghz with tvb +2 profile. Here are my stats, I am running bios 1505 if that helps. Good luck.

Edit: also rebar is on

Do you guys both have strix cards? Jayz2cents can't get it to work either, while his 4090FE runs fine:
(Although that looks like a slightly different issue)

#43 ·
I have that cable same problem

#44 ·
Have you tried other outputs like hdmi? What exactly happens when you boot, or does just nothing happen at all?

#45 ·
I tried both display port and hdmi.
Hen I boot I see the bios no problem, the Windows loading screen, but as soon as it loads the desktop the Nvidia driver crashes and the pc abruptly reboot automatically.

@sblantipodi

this is a comment on the JayzTwoCents video:

Hi Jay, Brian from ASRock (Malaysia) here. For your RTX issue, could you try change the option in Advanced > AMD PBS > AMD Common Platform Module > PCIe x16 Link Speed One of my local distributors had problem with Zotac card too on our X670E board, it refused to display but in the end it did with some BIOS setting changes.

Just so you know the HX1200i power supply is multi-rail, meaning each has over-current protection. In Corsair Link (free Windows software), you can set your PSU to single rail (this will over-ride the individual rail current safety limits, but it will still safely shut itself down around 1350w output during long durations based on my testing). Corsair link ALSO shows you your power output on the 12v (as well as 3/5v/and input/and efficiency/and fan speed etc), so you might be able to see and log the power spike if that is indeed happening.
-side note, you might have 2 cables on the same rail, I don't think that's possible on the HX1200i but in general something to watch out for with multi-rail systems)

I think its just Nvidia being Nvidia. I've had far more issues with my collectors edition Titan Xp than I ever have with my quad Xfire systems (which dominated the Titan in most of my games and I'll be happy when there is something worthwhile like 4x 6950XT or 4x 4090 for 4k 144Hz since that's cheap now), but Nvidia drivers for the first 6 months are always so janky and unplayable in most of my games, and that's even on Windows... Linux, just forget about ever using Nvidia, its not worth it, but I digress. Your issue will most likely be fixed in a couple of months, hopefully. Its almost definitely the driver being an issue (or Windows, Windows is pretty janky in general). Its called "bleeding edge" tech for a reason, now you know!

Yeah it's just weird that I'm having the exact same issue but his card (with the issue) works in his brothers PC that has identical specs to mine. The only difference between my pc and his brothers is the PSU being different and most likely his bios settings (he has the same bios ver) as I assume he didn't have to change his to get the card working. I have the Thermaltake GF3 which is ATX3.0 with a 12VHPWR port and I've also tried my Corsair RM1000X and the issue persisted with both PSU's.

I have the Z690 Extreme with 12900K and EVGA RTX 3090 Ti FTW3 Ultra. My Strix OC 4090 is out for delivery; I hope I won't share in the boot loop problems.

Thought I'd mention that I would get many WHEA-logger "corrected hardware error" warnings while using my 3090 Ti. Didn't seem to affect performance but I would occasionally get artifacts on the desktop. I fixed/eliminated the WHEA errors by disabling PCI Express Native Power Management within the BIOS.

Not saying this will be the fix but something to try.

I'll try it tomorrow, thanks for the suggestion, really appreciated.

Okay, so just got around to testing it in my girlfriends pc and it worked instantly on her setup which is the same effect @sblantipodi had seen with his brothers pc. Really starting to lean towards this being something ASUS is going to have to fix for some of their Z690 boards.. I'm going to pick up a new board tomorrow and see if that resolves it. I tried running on GEN 3 and also tried disabling PCI Express Native Power Management within the BIOS to no luck.

I know the 4090 is working on some Z690 Hero and Master boards but maybe we got ours in a different manufacturing batch that causes the issue. Might be due to a change of components on ASUS' end or something similar?
