Samsung 990 Pro IOPS are low

Just installed a 990 pro 1tb last night with a fresh install of Windows 10. Updated all of my drivers and firmware then ran multiple benchmark tests on Samsung Magician. The results as you see above are off. The Sequential Read and Write are perfect but the Random Read IOPS are only 46% of the advertised speed and the Random Write IOPS only about 10% of the advertised speed.

I reformatted multiple times since and have even run a benchmark using CrystalDiskMark in safemode to rule out software interference and the results are the same. Consistently around 50% and 10% of the advertised speed.
I have tried using it in the M2.1 and M2.3 slot, no difference.
No other HDD or SSD are connected.

My motherboard MSI Meg X570 ACE - MEG X570 ACE | Motherboard | MSI Global

CPU R5 3600,

64GB of ram running at 3200mhz (tested at 2133mhz and no improvement) - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082NXPZ2V?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

4090 Gaming X trio

Is this drive likely defective? Any help would be appreciated.

980s-990s are all defective. Samsung is really dropping the ball lately. Have you tried updating the firmware?

A new firmware update has just been released for the 990 (3B2QJXD7)

Having that said, 980 PRO and 990 PRO are not "defective" atleast not on my system, both my drives (980 & 990 2TB) have been working without any issues, Read/Write IOPS is also normal.

Same here with my 990 Pro 1TB. I dont know what that guy from above is dreaming about defective, when the only issue was a bad firmware a while ago that got patched..
The newly released firmware addresses some issue where BitLocker encryption doesnt work properly, thats it. Nothing to do with drive longevity or performance.

I have a 980 and it doesn't have that issue so must be a firmware-related issue with some of the drives. I always update the firmware of all my M.2 Samsungs which I have currently 3 on my system. Worse case re-install the Samsung utility software to me share is showing the information correctly.

Is the SSD connected to the M.2 slot of the CPU ?

That board has three M.2 slots. One is directly connected to the four exclusive PCI-E lines of the CPU and the rest are shared with the PCH lines.

I tried it in both the M2.1 and M2.3 slot. The M2.1 is the benchmark image in my original post. The M2.3 slot actually had "slightly" slower sequential read and write speeds (about 5%) but the IOPS were exactly the same.

Just installed the new firmware, about a 5% increase in IOPS but still underperforming especially in Write. Attached newest benchmark.

I tried CrystalDiskMark to bench the drive as well. It showed readings consistent with Samsung Magician. I've also done 4 reformats reinstalling Windows 10 and Samsung Magician each time. No backups from Onedrive or syncing or anything like that. Completely clean installs. No change.

Probably has to do with your motherboard. what m2 slot are you using? I'm not an expert in m2 slots but it looks like you are limited by the x4 speed.
I'm not an expert either but I feel like this isn't the case seeing as how I am hitting the proper Sequential speeds for the drive. I feel like that means its in a slot that "SHOULD" be able to achieve the proper IOPS but again I am no expert and maybe you're right.

Link it rather than trying to talk ****, because a quick google turns up zero results of what you’re talking about.

980 Pro’s were dying from an initial/very early release firmware. As long as you updated the firmware they should be fine. I’m sure there are DOA/defective drives as with any electronic component, but not a widespread issue indicating something wrong with the design.

They still initially released a defective product. And did it again with the 990.

A firmware fix doesn't fix their reputation.

The 990 is, again, a separate issue it seems. The firmware update doesn't seem to have helped users experiencing strange behavior.

With the 980 Pro, bad software that requires a simple firmware update is hardly what I'd call defective. Is it a good look? Absolutely not, and it should hurt their reputation. Regardless, calling the entire line of drives defective is a stretch.

I'm looking to replace my Crucial P2 2TB with a Solidigm P44 Pro due to Samsung dropping the ball. Samsung seems to have dropped the prices pretty heavily on their products in response to the issues with the old 980 Pro firmware and whatever is going on with the 990 Pro.

The 980/990 are garbage tier compared to the 950-970 designs. Unreliable and unpredictable drives, I got rid of mine asap.

@acoustic i still have that 980 Pro and after new firmware 3 moths ago he still do same thing if you are tolking about samsung 9XX and you are telling 1tb no problem 512 problem 990 some problems .And then you buy kingstone KC any size and you have no problems. Then samsung vs kingstone is defective ?

Maybe you just have a single bad 980 Pro, is what I'm saying. Warranty? RMA? One having an issue is not indicative of a defective line of products. What happened with my 500GB could have been due to a lightning strike right next to my house; the next day it was dead. Only thing that makes me think it's coincidence is that the rest of the PC was fine.

BTW, Solidigm P44 Pro 2TB is down to $129 right now. Insane deal for arguably the best all-around NVME on the market.

I decided to just give up trying to get it working and return it.
I just ordered myself a Solidigm P44 Pro 2TB
Either going to return the 990 for a refund or maybe a replacement to use as a storage drive seeing as how the replacement probably won't be up to snuff either if 990s are having issues. Undecided. Thank you all for your help.

Make sure to install the new driver from Solidigm. I believe they added buffer/cache tweaks. Which makes it a little faster than the default windows driver.

I know this is a bit of an old thread but I recently got the 990 Pro. I got over 1 million + on both Random Read & Write IOPS but slightly lower than you on Sequential, I think i'll take that.

I have some oofs with my 990 Pro, any ideas? I've done 4K alignment and optimization and so on with Easeus and Samsung Magician aswell as some random stuff with cmd and windows settings. I've run 3 tests below from first to latest: Seq.Read - Seq Write - Random Read - Random Write 11MB/S - 10MB/s - 2685 IOPS - 1953 IOPS 119MB/S - 36MB/s - 19531 IOPS - 6103 IOPS 79MB/S - 21MB/s - 12939IOPS - 4394 IOPS

Since the beginning all I have used were Samsung SSDs and then NVMe's and never disappointed. Ever since i got 980 things were not the same.

One of my 980s degraded very quick, within 2 years got to 60% and no more then 60/70TB written. Now I got the 990 2TB and 2 months later even after applying the new supposedly " fix firmware" it went from working to literally dying. Samsung sent me a replacement, but I didn't have much confidence so sold it for slightly cheaper just to get rid of it and I got another Firecuda 530 2TB as the 540's have some issues of their own.

Bottom line is....Samsung doesn't feel like "Samsung"

I've been running that same stick for since it was released with no apparent problems. I'd run some diagnostics and possible think about a RMA if not satisfied.
