They're getting pretty close. There are a ton of drives that can do 525 MB/sec sustained, and that's > 5 Gbps by the time you add in SATA protocol overhead. If they added a couple more flash channels in the SSD, it would exceed SATA 3 specifications.

Well with NGFF SSDs coming into existence I wouldn't be surprised if SSDs started skipping SATA and SATA became solely used for HDDs and Optical drive. To me that seems to make more sense m.2 SSDs with 1400MB/s Read/Writes already exist. It would also allow for continue laptop desktop consistency for SSDs, in terms of being the same form factor.
Only Time will truly tell.
