What's the point? SSDs can't even take full advantage of SATA III yet

They're getting pretty close. There are a ton of drives that can do 525 MB/sec sustained, and that's > 5 Gbps by the time you add in SATA protocol overhead. If they added a couple more flash channels in the SSD, it would exceed SATA 3 specifications.

Well with NGFF SSDs coming into existence I wouldn't be surprised if SSDs started skipping SATA and SATA became solely used for HDDs and Optical drive. To me that seems to make more sense m.2 SSDs with 1400MB/s Read/Writes already exist. It would also allow for continue laptop desktop consistency for SSDs, in terms of being the same form factor.
Only Time will truly tell.

 

I have been waiting to upgrade my SSD/HDD for the next gen stuff. 2015 is the next time they will be upgrading? Really? Source?

 

SATA 3.2 could come on the Broadwell chipset, or it may not come until Skylake when we get PCI-E 4.0, which would make more sense.

EDIT: looks like Broadwell is getting PCI-E 4.0 too, it's just not on that pic.

Broadwell is integrated into the motherboard though right?
