Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme w/ Silverstone FM121?

Hey Guys,

I have a Silverstone FM121 sitting on my desk and I I considering buying a Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme.........

But after reading reviews I see that the fan mounting clips don't work with all 120mm fans. So I need to know before I buy if my FM121 will fit it.

Does anyway here have a FM121 & Ultra 120 Extreme working?

Thanks

EDIT: Sorry, Its a Ultra 120 EXTREME, not the normal 120

I have that exact set up. I used a jig saw and cut the corner blocks out. Works fine. have a look a my gallery I have a couple of pics with the setup on the board.

Also the ultra and ultra extreme use the same mount style.

I said above that I really couldn't explain it well. Take a look at the difference in the corners between that Silverstone fan and one of those SilenX fans in the corners.

Hey, everyone posted within like one minute of each other, so you can't blame me for copying what everybody else said.

Take a jigsaw, hold the fan and cut the inside chunk of each corner out (two cuts on each corner, then take pliers and bend the piece back and forth till it snaps off)

Ok so what exact part do I saw?

I will tell my dad cause he has a load of tools, I have my trusty screwdriver and thats it........

Hey Rob,
It looks to me like your fan is backwards, unless the case fan in the pic is an intake (I can't tell) and the clip as well.
It's alot easier to mount the fan with the clip reversed IMO.

An additional Duke Tip
If you add a bend at about a 10-15 degree angle to the V shaped area that fits in the fan screw hole the clips work much better. This makes for a slightly pointer "V" that fits the screw hole much better.
You must add the bend on the side of the "V" that goes twards the HS retaining end.

Sigh, it was backwards. I took the pic, fired it up realized I must have been sleeping (mind you this fan sat in a drawer for about 6 months so I forgot which way was which), took it all apart again and fixed it.

Man oh man that was annoying

Also, the clips had to go that way because of tight clearance with my aftermarket northbridge cooler it was a very tight squeeze

I did but the supplier didn't have a spare pair of clips. Besides, I can hit over 3.8 Ghz stable with orthos with one fan. anandtech was able to hit 3.96 but I haven't had the time to try it yet.

Have you looked into seeing if the cooler will fit in your case? I know the extreme has two side fans but I'm not sure how deep they go into the case. Hopefully they are not like the 25cm side fan which interfere with the cooler.

I had to remove one of my door fans to make mine fit. the damn thing is very tall
