Asus had some cool new monitors on display in its CES suite. Here's the the MX2900Q, a 29" IPS offering with a 21:9 aspect ratio and a 2560x1080 resolution. ...a smaller, 27" version of this display is "just now shipping." Asus was also showing off the VG248QE, a 24-inch Nvidia 3D Vision monitor with a blistering 144Hz peak refresh rate and 1-ms gray-to-gray response time.

Personal opinion: I've tried to come up with a justification for these 21:9 displays, but I just can't manage it. My main issue is that quite a few games do not like being expanded past 16:9, even some Eyefinity and NV Surround games throw a fit at 2560x1080. If all the games played nice at this aspect ratio, it would be one thing. But as it stands, the annoyance at getting a new game (or replaying an old game) and having it refuse to do 21:9, leaving it with massive pillarboxes, would be a real kick to the wallet and make me wonder why I ever purchased this. Not to mention the 1080px height when it comes to productivity work.

Cool for some applications, but not very practical when they cost oodles of cash.

Yup. If you had loads of cash and could setup some sort of Lazy Susan with a 16:9 and a 21:9 back to back and just spin it to the right display for the right game/app, that'd be pretty sweet.

For anyone interested in how the physical sizes and aspect ratios compare this is a little project I did over the weekend. Make sure to open them all in new tabs and tab between them to get the full effect. Also, DPI couldn't really be represented, and yes I know 27" 2560x1440 screens have a nicer picture thanks to the denser DPI. This also presumes a fixed FOV. In games where you can change it you can adjust it to come close to or match the 29" while also getting more vertical FOV as well.

Sizes are 23", 24", 27", 29", and 30" in that order:

Cheers for the nice little image comparison. Yeah I actually will probably give this monitor a try if at least only to take one for the team. (If I can get my hands on one). I think it would be great for my situation since I have barely not enough space for dual monitors but would greatly like more horizontal real estate. (For things like two windows snapped to each side) Applications like Ultraedit benefit from this since it doesn't have an easy way to have two copies of files open in it that is easy to read on a standard 24" or 27".

I don't know if that made all that much sense but heck.

The Dell is out: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=225-4201

The whole reason I did this little comparison was to make my mind up one way or the other. Between that and the first 3 games (Mark of the Ninja, Scribblenauts, and GTA IV [not the best representative sample, I know]) I tried not liking 2560x1080 pretty much convinced me not to.

One possible exciting thing about the Dell is apparently it runs fine at 2560x1080 @ 75Hz without dropping frames according to this post: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1985885&p=2r40

I quite like it personally. And it is perfect for Windows 8's metro UI...

Yeah.. I dont think my table could support the weight or have the space to fit a tri-monitor setup, even though I really want one.

Kind of want the 21:9. Would be nice to work with when using Photoshop since I can have multiple windows lined up and W8 looks pretty sick on it. Also I dig that aspect ratio for gaming.

IPS can be great for gaming. Crysis 2 looks stunning on my IPS panels....

Loving that Win8 screen shot on this panel. Looks like the Catleap stand as well...

Too bad it isn't x1200px. That way I could just play games windowed in 1920x1080 and have the rest of space for gadgets and stuff. Would be great to replace my 2 monitors.

12ms latency (input lag + half pixel response time) on Game preset. 25ms on default preset. The 25ms is comparable to the vast majority of well respected 27" name brand displays with scalers. The 12ms is quite good.

And as much as I can't justify it, I might end up getting one anyway along with two VESA swing arms, stack it with my existing display, and move the right display to the right spot as needed.

If anyone is curious what games look like at 21:9 take a gander through here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=457378&page=288
That page and following three have a number of 21:9 shots, and then everyone got tired of black bars on their 16:9 displays and went back to native res.
