A Minnesota hacker prosecutors described as a "depraved criminal" was handed an 18-year prison term Tuesday for unleashing a vendetta of cyberterror that turned his neighbors' lives into a living nightmare.

Barry Ardolf, 46, repeatedly hacked into his next-door neighbors' Wi-Fi network in 2009, and used it to try and frame them for child pornography, sexual harassment, various kinds of professional misconduct and to send threatening e-mail to politicians, including Vice President Joe Biden.

I bet you he was guessing the password, and to the uninformed/misinformed he was "hacking" A damned PII could break a WEP key in less than two weeks.... On to the real subject, he got what he deserved hopefully the victims can recover from his idiocy.... Some people really make me sick, good part is anyone involved in CP, no matter how little. NEVER makes it long in any prison......ever.

In the data surrounding the threatening traffic, they found traffic containing Ardolf's name and Comcast account
Accessing personal email on a 666 network???

*As for the 2 weeks to crack WEP, the first step there is gathering packets, which can take several days+ depending on the traffic.

What people should be taking away from this is. That if you are hijacking someones wifi you are not invisible. they can use wireshark or any othe packet sniffing software and gather intel on you. they could have easily reversed the rolls on this guy if they knew what to do with the data they sniffed.

Reformatting a drive doesnt do the trick. Information is still available in slack space on the drives. You may not get all of the informaiton written but you will recovery a significant portion that will stand up in court.

To effectively erase a hard drive you need to do a DOD wipe with at least 8 passes and alternating bits .f.g 0x00, 0xff, 0x0F, 0xF0,etc.

This will erase the data, but it may still be recoverable with an electronic microscope and a lot of time. Not cost effective nor justifiiable.

True, but you can use the same tools along with Kismet to determine their mac, frame, and SSID. Set up your MAC with their address and spoof their MAC. This approach makes it much more difficult to determine who the real attacker is.
