9800 X3d Air cooler suggestion

Have been air cooling my whole life and trying to research for a 9800 X3d that is similar to the setup like my Silver Arrow I had on the 5930k.

I saw that Noctua, thermalright have some but I can't see which is better for this system to replace my old.

Would love any input!

The thing about the new CPU air coolers...they are really heavy. And they take up a lot of room over the CPU and RAM. I can't speak to the thermal load of a 9800x3d, but the ThermalRight FC 140 does just as well as the Arctic LF II 280 with my 5800x. And the only thing that can go wrong with the Thermalright are the fans.

Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE or Royal Knight 120 SE.

That's really good info the issue for me is I can't have a cooler that's taller from board to the end of my case as my current. This silver arrow just hits the leak with 3 Noctua fans on it.

The Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE that Blameless suggested is smaller than the Silver Arrow.

That's perfect.

Does it make 0 sense to find a bracket to make my 10 year old cooler work?

Have a 5090 FE
EVGA G2 1300 watt

Thinking Asus Taichi

Just need to figure best 96gb ram setup and which copper to use for 9800x3d

Regarding reuse of coolers: it depends. Hotspots have changed size and locations and what was excellent years ago isn't necessarily good now. My memory is with a new mount, which slightly changes the location of the cooler on the chip the arrow is still decent. Look it up though. Some of the coolers did not fare well.

That cpu can take the maximum that air cooling can give it, which is a bit over 300w. That will allow some overclock, though there are people with open loops who will have more overclock room. There is apparently one better than the macho, though you may or may not have enough height to take it. Iirc its a 140mm tower cooler so its really tall. If you dont have room for that you can probably still fit a macho, which is kind of a fatboy 120 iirc that sits low. Neither are cheap. I think thermaltake makes both. My memory is the dh15 is only good for about 230w. Which is still enough to get some OC, just not as much.

I assume your "Silver Arrow" cooler is probably Silver Arrow SBE or Silver Arrow IBE. They are both basically same cooler with IBE having offset finpacks for better PCIe clearance. Silver Arrow IBE Extreme is same as old IBE but uses TY-143 2500rpm fans while Silver Arrow SBE came with TY-145 1500rpm fans. TY-145 is basically a 1500rpm version of TY-140

New Thermalright coolers are as good or better than any other brand .. and cost 1/3rd to 1/2 as much money. All Thermalright top tier twin towers cool about the same (within 3-5c of each other). It's hard to say which is best because each CPU IHS mounts and prints different on each model cooler's base, and each print transmits heat a little better / worse than another print. Sometimes one cooler will perform slightly better on a specific CPU while another cooler is slightly better on a different CPU (again only a few degrees of difference).

New coolers weight basically the same as old coolers.
Original Silver Arrow is L147mm x W123mm x H163mm and weights 825g w/o fans
Silver Arrow SBE is L154 mm x W103 mm x H165 mm and weights 750g
Silver Arrow IBE is L155mm x W103mm x H163mm and weights 850g
New Frost Vortex 140 SE is L140 mm x W109 mm x H158 mm and weights 1000g
New Peerless Assassin 140 is L140 mm x W132 mm x H158 mm
New Peerless Assassin 120 is L125 mm x W110 mm x H155 mm and weights 730g
New Silver Arrow IBE Extreme is L155mm x W103mm x H163mm and weights 850g

Owterspace uses or has used many of Thermalright's top coolers on his hi-heat systems. Hopefully he will weight in with his thoughts.

I love Thermalrights old coolers, I really do. Just not on new hardware.

Pretty much any of their current top coolers will do what you ask.

Need small? Yes, Phantom Spirit 120 SE to me is a tiny cooler lol. Works great on my 5900X, and right now it is on my 5800X3D with a single TL-K12 in the center position.

FC140 is also 1000g without fans :)

as others had said you can't go wrong with Thermalright's bigger coolers like the 140d. That being said I'm a big fan of the scythe ninja with better fans granted that cooler will not fit in most systems and needs good case air flow to work well, is more of a semi passive cooler so keep that in mind. i had it cooling a over clocked 140w TDP CPU with 1200rpm fans and it never had a problem.

I have posts in these Thermalright threads showing my results. Of course a bunch of testing was done during the winter because.. Canada.

:)

You should be running extended power limits, not stock ;)

So finally figured stuff out.

Getting 9950x3d
Looking at the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE.

Mobo: msi tomahawk 870 since the Asrock Taichi are burning out chips.
Ram. Got the Amazon prime corsair vengeance 2x48gb for $199

Think that cooler will be good for juat a modest overclock over my current? I looked at the noctua but everyone seems to be saying this is the best price to value ratio.

Thanks for all the input!

Corvair Vengeance RGB DDR5 RAM is 44mm tall so top of front 120mm fan over RAM will be about 259mm above CPU. That's about 1mm higher than top of cooler heat pipe tips, so a nice fit.

Please let us know how system runs when you get it built!

Just got the parts ordered
9800x3d
MSI Tomahawk 870e
Looking at. G.skill.flare X5 64gb (cl30/ddr5 6000)

Stuck between the
Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO CPU Cooler - Black
Or
Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE CPU Air Cooler

Can't seem to figure the $10 difference what's different exactly. Do. You have any thoughts @doyll

The EVO has different fans and decorative plates concealing the top of the heatpipes. The EVO fans spin faster and will almost certainly move more air through the heatsink at higher RPM, but I've never heard them so I don't know what their noise profile is like.

The SE has cheaper TL-C12B V2 fans, but they aren't bad at all, considering the price. Unless one gets a bad fan they have very little bearing noise and don't get fast enough to really be loud. There are certainly better fans, but not for the money (replacements are like $3 each).

If you're going to keep the stock fans, it's going to come down to whether you want to shave a couple C off max temperature (or get another 5-10W out of the PPT before it throttles) at the cost of $10 and more noise.

If you're going to use your own fans, then there is no reason to consider the more expensive cooler, unless you really don't like the look of heatpipe nubs.

Thanks that makes perfect sense! I I currently have 3 140mm Noctua fans on my current cooler LOL. So maybe I just keep those 🤔 when I get back I'll take a look. Im a total air cooling nerd and try to build it the best I can each re build so I can not touch it again. Current case though makes the room so hot and I'm jealous of some builds that se to keep things cooled by air and not get as hot. So maybe I should consider variable speeds dependent on temperature this build.

Your explanation was hugely helpful just bought the:

Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO
Kingpin thermal paste
Extra Noctua fan dampeners
G.skill X5 flare 64gb CL30-36-36-96 ddr5 6000 ram with the 33min clearance for the cooler.

Now it's happening!

I have some Duronaut, its ok.. but I still prefer SYY-157. I put that **** on everything.

This is good to know. So kingpin actually could be detrimental?

I can just donate it to someone since I'm air cooling.

I really would prefer a paste I don't need to redo after 2/3 years.

Hell my 5930k has the same paste from 9 years ago.

@Blameless / @Owterspace does it just dry out in normal loads?

I had looked at duraoaut but had read it needed to be re applied so didn't expect I chose wrong hahaha.

Checking the SYY-157. Now

#25 ·
So the SYY-157 will perform better than the kingpin with air cooling basically?

Better for me to cancel the kingpin?

#26 ·
For me it works well, people say there is better. But for the price, I would rather run that then other popular choices. To me it compares to the old TFX blend, but way easier to spread. Duronaut is sticky, you have to use more to get a good spread. I see better boost clocks for longer than I do with Duronaut. The big D is still a good TIM though, but I have a 40g tube of SYY because I think it is good. I used to swap CPU's and coolers around quite a bit when I was on AM4. I enjoyed pushing that socket.

I just finished drooling from my last bong rip, sorry if my post is a bit scattered. Its because I am ripped.

Thanks! I just bought it, any recs on how it should be properly applied to the AM5 chip? I I read it's a bit of a different application to put on than x99.

I draw a line down the bottom, then pull it up, and I work it in each direction until it is nice an uniform. I keep firm pressure on the spatula because I want a thermal interface, not a thermal insulator :)
