Crucial or Patriot?

I've narrowed my choices down to these two 4gb kits,

Crucial Ballistx DDR2-800 "A" revision

Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2-800

The Crucial sticks use the new IC revision, supposedly fixing the high failure rate issue. The Patriot are cheap, and have a decent track record. Does Patriot use the same IC's/PCBs in these as they do in the Vipers? Is the difference just a heatspreader? The other brand I would consider is Mushkin, but I would like to get 8gb, and they're a bit more expensive. I'm partial to Crucial, but I've always wanted to try Patriot. Anyone have any suggestions either way? Thanks.

Crucial definitely, as long as it's double sided..better hope it is. I've had Patriot, it was good, but not " OH MAN WOW 8) ". Cruicial also has much more support and a larger knowledge base about things

I use both :

Crucial BalistiX Tracer (PC-6400) 800mhz

Mushkin (PC2-8500)

And I would recommend both

I had some issues at first with the BalistiX and thought it was the ram itself...But after careful trial and error I found that it was not the BalistiX but the mother board Bios itself, so I down graded Bios and everything works like a dream.

I have never used Patriots but I have heard good things about them aswell

I've only had bad luck with Crucial when attempting to OC them. Run at stock they've always been fine for me.

Personally I have these Mushkin chips OC'd to 1066 5-5-5-15. Supposedly they'll go all the way to 1200, though I haven't tried to push them yet.

Really, I've never had a problem with the OCing. Just sudden death, until I learned not to run 2.2v through them. Then no more deaths and the tightest timings I've ever got on any cheap 800mhz memory. 900mhz 4.3.3.3 2T on 1.9v and 1000 4.4.4.12 1T on 1.9v is the best I could muster.... For some reason my BIOS update changed that, now I have to run them at 2.0v for anything over stock. I'll also add these are the ones rated for 2.2v.

My Patriots do just fine, but when I go 4GB, I'm going Mushkin Redline Ascent DDR2-1000 5-5-5-12

Oh. heh. I usually don't buy cheap memory for myself, just for other people.

Like I said, the Crucial Ballistix I've linked to are a new revision, they use less voltage, and so far haven't had a bad rating on newegg, but so few people are purchasing them, because of the recent history. The RAM is double sided, since they're a 2x2gb, and I don't think anyone has produced single sided 2gb sticks with decent timings yet. I'm conisdering both of these because of their price and overall reputation. Patriot is decent, and Crucial has had a very good reputation until recently. I think it's worth giving this new revision some consideration.

As far as RMA's go, Crucial is so easy to RMA, I've never had an issue with them, so I don't know if you had a bad experience or what, but I've had to RMA 4 kits, and it's all been hassle free. Like others have said, the sticks work great if you don't give them their rated voltage. Under 2.2v, the older sticks work great(and are working great for me right now, I just want higher density).

I would buy Muskin, but the Patriot or Crucials will be $110 after rebate, the Mushkin would be ~$160 after rebate. I don't plan on going beyong DDR2-1000 if I can help it, and the Ballistix and Patriot seem to be EPP ready, so they should work at DDR2-1000 easily.

So, I'm leaning towards the Patriot sticks. The A revision sticks on newegg have one or two negative reviews from people who have bought them, while the Patriot has 50 positive reviews out of 62 total. All of the negative reviews are dated June or earlier. I just worry about giving ram 2.2v after dealing with these crucial sticks and knowing they die if you use their rated voltage.

The old Crucials were rated @ 2.2v, the newer memory is rated @ 2.0v. Go to Crucials site as newegg isn't perfect at listing correct specs. Last time I looked newegg still sold the 667 Ballistix rated @2.2v they are the exact same as the 800 double sided sticks everyone raved about. Those will reach 1100 sometimes 1200mhz..........Never pay attention to Newegg reviews.

Do not read review from newegg. If reviews are needed, google them and read from reliable sources.

Crucial had great ram (double sided), but now that they've gone single sided it's not as good for overclocking. Not to mention the old double sided ballistix tends to die, I've seen it happen. Patriot, is what I'm running, although not the best ram available, it's pretty good.

I have the old ram, rated for 2.2v, double sided...Newegg doesn't sell it anymore. What they sold for some time was the single sided sticks at 2.2v, but those failed for a lot of people. I just want to go to higher capacity sticks for better compatibility with motherboards, and for room to upgrade. As for newegg reviews, I don't pay attention to them, but they can be useful to see what kind of failure rate is happening. The Patriot have been available for a long time, and have a pretty high rating, the new ballistix haven't been on the site for that long, but so far have a spotless rating.

again, the new crucial stuff is a new revision, not the same as the dreaded single sided sticks. The 2x1gb kits they sell are now all single sided, but use a new revision, so they may have a lower failure rate, but it's too soon to really make that judgment. I'll probably just get the Patriot though, since before rebate they're cheaper, and they seem to have a decent track record. I'm just worried as 2.2v for ram seems a bit much.

Don't worry, I have the exact same Patriot RAM you're looking at, but 2x1GB instead of 2x2GB. I've had them running at 800MHz 4-4-4-12-21-2T @ 2.2V for a year now with no issues. I was even able to overclock them a little bit, but they don't go too terribly far, and I had to run them at 2.3V, so I just put them back to stock. I tried to run 4-4-4-12 1T @ 2.2V, but they didn't like that too much (stability issues), even though I was able to benchmark with Everest Ultimate and got over 11K MB/s. If you want to overclock much past 800MHz, I would get a different set of RAM, though. Like I said before, I'm about to upgrade to 4GB and I'm going with Mushkin Redline Ascents. A little pricey, but should be a nice upgrade.

Weird, these sticks support EPP, so they should run over DDR2-800 fine with loose timings. I read a newegg review where the user says he only used 2.0v for them to get DDR2-800 and the 4-4-4-12 timings.

I am highly pleased with my Mushkin RAM.

So, I imagine Mushkin would get more votes than Patriot or Crucial, I might just go with them.

Definitely Crucial don't let the bad rap Crucial had on the old Ballistix sway you away from a good product. The new ones are going to make your life happy and they are better chips than PATRIOT.
