[Engadget] Xbox 360 Jasper motherboard with 512MB storage hitting US stores

When the Jasper motherboards started showing up in Xbox 360 consoles late last year there was reason for excitement -- quieter fans, more efficient design, and 256MB of internal storage to set gamers free of overpriced memory cards. Now the systems are receiving an unannounced storage boost, with an XboxHacker forum member braza noticing that his Japanese Arcade model sported a 4GB 4Gb Samsung NAND chip. That's twice the size of the old one, giving the equivalent of a 512MB internal memory unit. That first system was manufactured in April, and they're starting to hit US Arcade units as well. As of now we're not sure if there's a way to tell from outside the box whether you have this beefier revision of Jasper, but we're sure your local retailer wouldn't mind if you just bought their entire stock of consoles and ripped them all open to see.

I don't know why they don't just put like 5gb's.

Revisions? Would you rather they stick with the initial very prone to fail launch console? Then you'd probably moan about it not being done.

This is a very welcome update. Who doesn't want 256 extra free memory?

Thanks for this. +1

All fanboyishness aside, this is something I've always wondered. Here you've got a product that's fairly well known for its failures and issues, yet people still buy them. If it were anything else, it would be avoided like the plague.

I give props to MS for weathering the RROD storm thus far. They really haven't lost a beat.

They are small revisions. Would you call adding an 80Gb backup drive to your PC an upgrade or just a small revision? Its not like MS are upgrading processors or graphics chips. It is when that happens, that consoles will fail to exist.

Actually the "prone to fail" X360s are done. I have a X360 20gb Pro R2 and works like a charm.

They are bought since they are the cheapest HD gaming console. Now that there aren't as much PS3 exclusive titles people will stick to the cheaper alternative: a la xbox360. Why pay more for a system when they both play the same games and people don't see a difference.

Also the monthly fee is seen as a minimal amount of cost. As long as there is no large up front fee like the PS3 is then people are satisfied.

If you own a GFWL game and you're signed in then you can send messages and voice chat with friends, but for some odd reason the standalone GFWL client has no community features as is solely for purchasing content from the Marketplace.

I have a hush hush version of Crysis, would that work?
