There have been rumors of new AMD video cards on the horizon, however they certainly won't be ready before the end of 2014. Does this mean that AMD are currently 'on the rocks' with a poor-looking 2014? The Fool article released a strong statement, claiming that "the only thing keeping AMD afloat today, besides the hope that the future will be brighter, is its deal to supply the game consoles with SoCs" adding that "all AMD has is hype, and that's just not enough".

This. Overly sensationalist article.

The kicker is Nvidia is slow playing AMD with it's maxwell chips. Like the GK110, Nvidia is just making oodles of money with GM104 and just delaying GM110 until AMD comes out with something that can compete.

I am a part of this. Went from a 290x to a 970

Is AMD making any money from Hawaii? Both Kepler and Maxwell isn't really faster or better than Hawaii, and with the price drops AMD is competing just fine. Maybe AMD is waiting for GM200 to drop than crush it with the 390x. I mean isn't speculating fun

You're welcome to your opinion of course, but objectively yes, gm204 maxwell cards are better in every metric of quality for a video card. They are faster in reviews, oc better, run cooler, run quieter, take less power, have extra software features widely lauded by users and reviewers, and the cut down version is about the same pricing while the notably faster full fat chip is pricier. There's a reason the market share is shifting so drastically and rapidly (only half a quarter for maxwell 2.0 so far, as the article notes it will be even more this coming results report) and it isn't because people randomly decided they think the name is cooler. I just hope amd recovers, I don't want to see the cpu market be a model for what the gpu market will become where we only have one real major player and pricing is high with slow advances.

Kinda bummed about Nvidia releasing GM204 performance is pretty disappointing for next gen, but then again I am a GK110 owner but yeah at least they released something

Gm204 is the first part, gm200 will be the new top end

. And the 295x2 is a clearance fire sale, already running out of stock with no restock slated, just like the Radeon 7990 last time around. Can't really call an end of life clearance sale a price drop, heh.

I really don't get why Nvidia have this kind of market share, amd has been mostly competitive price/performance and feature wise for years, sure you can argue on the forum but even my friends it friends at school are clueless of what they are talking about hardware wise so surely 90% of the people clearly don't by a long shot. I feel like they are always one step behind for a few months but considering they only got 35% market share that's pretty great.

Hope for them (and us

) that the 390x/380x kick some major ass.

Like I said marketing, amd dont plan to spend any extra on it either.

Its working right?
no, not really.

just "connect the dots" (actually that is already done) and you'll see the market cycling between AMD(Q2 of every year)/nVidia(Q4 of every year).

nothing to see here . .but an analysis' opinion of a horrible metric.

GM204 is better in every metric? Theres barely a performance increase, and Hawaii is over a year old. You wouldn't be able to notice any real world difference in gaming between a 290 vs a 970, sure the 970 eats less power as a result outputs less heat, but really a good after market Hawaii card has no issues in that regard. As of right now AMD has the best price/perf GPU available bundle with free games.

Regardless, your stance on this is hilarious.

He is right, performance is better in all areas, even if its small amount on a handful of games its still better. And this is the mid range die for Maxwell. The fact that you pretty much need an aftermarket cooler or water cooling for the 290/290x to actually get the most out of the card is ******ed IMO.

not the last family it took half year for other brands to release custom(reference cards were crap, not rly worthit)
and before that when their chips were super expensive in usa(minecoinfest) killed the sales.. people just selling their current cards lol
in Europe was quite different, it had a decent price but still, it took too long to get a good card..
i kinda miss overclocking in those jet engines

Regardless of this article it is time to go AMD. They've already relinquished from competing against Intel on the CPU front and I doubt anyone wants to see an NV only GPU market, fanboy or not. NV has a lot of pull, lots of recognition and are the go-to brand/household name for casuals and recommended by them. I watch a lot of casters on Twitch and rarely ever hear anyone mention a AMD product when the GPU conversation comes up, let alone the CPU topic. It's the standard "aww buy a 970 bro, or if you got teh extra cash get a 980".

So regardless of this article's integrity I feel AMD is in need. It's not as if AMD produces inferior GPU's either - they have generally retained their longevity especially after the implementation of GCN coupled with the wide memory bus and abundance of video ram.
