What’s the industry dark secrets that forced gigabyte from wide availability of this monsta board? 10 layer pcb, optimised memory traces, low height tantalum capacitors with better voltage and capacitance stability under heat, atx sized

why did amd forced gigabyte hands?

@chewonthis @J7SC

That's a long answer that I don't know the true deep dark secrets to even though I'm deep in on working with tachyon and hicookie.

I can offer possible explanations/educated guesses but it will have to wait till after work.
Hicookie?

Maybe Asus has bought the full rights to overclock AMD cpu's to the max :D

Most likely actually.....

I don't think there is a deep dark secret, Gigabyte probably produced a Limited quantity and discontinued as most normal people don't want a 2 DIMM board, good VRM heatsinks and etc. I guess its the same with the original White 790 Apex and the 670 gene.

Can't be, because B650 Tachyon was never retail. Atleast not here in Europe.

Instead of hypotheticals or conspiracy theories wait till I get home and I'll explain in depth the logical.

Highly doubt it was ASUS. If anything success with board would be reason for the "attacks" of what might potentially come later. Kill something before it becomes something greater approach.

If your not in the know. Shush please. I will explain reasoning if your just freaking patient.

There's 5 boards total there...I might actually have the answers...just maybe.

Unless you want to show me your pile then give your logical input.

When there is too much secrets, It's the natural thing that happen... 😅

@chewonthis will have the much more up-to-date skinny on that. Suffice it to say that the Tachyon is a Gigabyte 'Halo' board with small production runs - 'retail price' probably does not even cover cost.

Gigabyte has been doing small-production-run halo boards for a long time - the boards go primarily to HWBot-active folks and select reviewers. Ten years ago, when I was still doing HWbot 'elite/sub-zero', Gigabyte sent me the 22 phase Z170 Force, along with a 5 GHz-on-AIO-capable 6700K and DDR4 (just released back then) which could exceed DDR4200 w/o too much fuss. It is a brilliant board with various features (3x NVME onboard, Quad-SLI 3.0x16 etc) I have had running daily now for close to a decade, in the media room these days. The irony is that I had already gone off points at HWBot due to work-related time constraints. These days, Gigabyte and I just exchange New Year / Season's Greetings...

I wonder if Gigabyte will do a select run of B850e Tachyons - if you can get your hands on one (eg. via contacts at country-specific distributors or large wholesalers), go for it !

Alright I'm home so post 1.

Background........if you don't care about credentials then skip to post 2.

First off I have no phd no diploma nor do i have any ASE certifications yet im an advanced automotive diagnostic technician.

Some people are just gifted and that's the way of life. Along with the gifts come lots of flaws.
If i came with a warning label it would be "does not play well with others"

If you don't want the truth don't ask me. If you want something sugarcoated go eat a donut applies here.

Been doing this since slotkets. If you don't know what a slotket is go google it.

My first opportunity with working with a vendor was ATI and there 480/580 motherboard chipsets.
A random guy on the forums saw potential or something and reached out to me.

AMD acquired ATI.

Acquiring ATI acquired me. Here's how that went in the end......

Image

I worked with james/robert on ryzen launch and threadripper.

I actually got blacklisted by USA giga rep for thrashing the boards vrm thermals.......That guy was let go.....seems like the constructive criticism could have helped them back then on x370.

Being blacklisted with giga I helped Nick Shih with Asrock AMD boards instead.

I was also working with a company named actineon on a project not to long ago until they burned me.......but that's another story.

I actually was in discussion with AMD's gpu division for an opportunity not to long ago but covid hit......and I really can't go into details.

This all said when you have this much background......and someone that was probably in diapers when i was doing this gets disrespectful you can imagine why i'm so quick to put them in there place.

Also when a couple of heavy hitters are battling it out........we don't need cheerleaders so stay out of it.......or don't and get caught in the crossfire.

That said Safedisk Shamino Splave Nick Shih Hicookie just to name a few are all OG's in this game like me and i have a ton of respect for them all but at the end of the day we are on opposite teams...

This stood out in the 2011 post...
"I came off abrasive many times and that is attributed to my tough love teaching/helping approach."

You're abrasive because you're a blowhard. It's all about you you you you 24/7 you. Nothing has changed.

Now onto Tachyon.

First off I'm not a paid employee or an unpaid employee just a friend trying to help hicookie out. People like me in the industry can see potential.
It takes people like me to unlock that potential. Sometimes you have to bust your ass to fix things to extract that potential.

Problem 1.
when zen launched there was very slight differences from 2dpc to 1dpc......We can mostly attribute this to poor agesa support and launch was 1/1 mode......

Problem 2.
I'm not a fan of intel lan especially i225v and true to form it was problematic and cutting out on launch drivers.

Problem 3.
Its no secret that giga boards were having HV mode and Async mode issues.....it wasn't hardware. Some of it was agesa some of it was bios side.

Problem 4.
AMD released 1/2 mode about 1/3 way into the product cycle. Giga 2dpc were actually good at 1/2 mode further negating the "selling" point for 1dpc.
At this point we are 1/3 way into the product cycle......

Problem 5.
AMD launched 8000 series 2/3 way into product cycle. An oversight ......the bios chip was to small to accommodate the size of the APU agesa.
We had to replace bios chip with a larger one to actually use the APU.

Problem 6.
Boards finally working good but we are at end of product cycle. Now 9000 launches and memory compatibility for many boards is less than optimal.

So pick your poison.

For a long time i had to develop workarounds to get the board to work the way I wanted it to.

I fought for many things for giga users GDM off was one of them........your welcome.

Now onto what I think happened. simply put bean counters.

Now onto why i even wasted a year or so of my life.....

Unlike most vendors im in the trenches and I have my ear to the streets......Believe me i heard you all bitching about it not being publicly available.

I gambled a year of my life away to see if i could change that and make a difference.

I think we have something special now.....and I think its public release worthy......definitely more worthy than AMD's agesa on launch.

Lets wait and see if my gamble paid off or if bean counters strike again......

in summary from industry insiders here, the dark secrets was gigabyte made mistake to create the tachyon under b650e branding.

The board was just too overbuilt and needed a x670e branding for them set a higher srp. so CES it is! next week x870e TACHYON vs x870e APEX vs x870e OCF (hopefully!)

Problem 5.
AMD launched 8000 series 2/3 way into product cycle. An oversight ......the bios chip was to small to accommodate the size of the APU agesa.
We had to replace bios chip with a larger one to actually use the APU.
gigabyte cheaped out on their first gen x570 boards with reusing older 128Mb bios chip, even if master had dual bios which was a waste!

but b650e tachyon specs page list the industry standard 256Mb bios, dual bios even!

i guess their AM5 bios had too much junk. Asus bios best for AM5 still!

...meanwhile, back at the farm -
...when I got my Aorus 670E Master, 7950X3D and 2x 24 GB GSkill M-die 7200 TZ5RK (XMP), I used Buildzoid's vid below for trying out DDR5 8000 on his B650E Tachyon for my initial settings, and it worked right away on the Master. This is not to say that the Tachyon does not ultimately have higher oc potential, but the Aorus Master 4-DIMM series has been/is great...

I also added a native GSkill 8400 TZ5RK kit and it runs the same 8000 at much lower timings and voltages (and up to 8600 via bclk when fooling around). When the two kits are combined, 96 GB CL 30 6400 is also not a problem at all. I actually prefer the 870E 4-DIMM setup and other extra features as I tend to 'recycle' my current mobos into next year's productivity machine. That said, for pure OC w/sub-ambient. the Tachyon B650E (or B850E if that is a thing) is likely the better choice.

Probably not. This is the only kit that worked in old tachyon. I binned many others in same sku....all were not working on 9000 cpu

This kit is actually binned on old tachyon for Apu and does 10600 c40 GB3 and just lucky it works on 9000 CPU also.

It's a legit retail kit purchased in a store by me but it sure feels like top drawer gskill sample 😉

All the lexar7200 ares work in the board every kit I put through it on 9000 cpu Just need to bin a few sets for a good kit.

It pretty much has too, CPU only has 28 lanes,

16- gpu
4 - nvme
4 - usb4 I believe
4 - chipset

I think mandatory usb4 has stolen 4 x lanes, that don't seem to have a switch to optional nvme, and no matter how many chipsets you have, they are all stacked on the one PCIE4x4 Chipset link, so will share bandwidth, with every chipset device.
So you can stack many PCIE5x4 on the GPU lane with a switch, but that's really just for professional users who don't need or can sacrifice GPU lanes.
What would be cool, is if they gave you the option to reuse the CPU HDMI lanes :)

you guys want to see what ive been working on well........here's a sneak peak.

Sorry some stuff still hidden. Don't need copy pasters using my bench tunes against me.

when someone whipped out a 34 49 gdm off gb3 and i returned fire......i decided to run something else since im not gb3 suicide stable ;)

completely untuned benches just pure HW tunes

And for kicks Ive also worked on apu....well for an entire 10 minutes maybe ;)
