I bought a used GTX 1080 Ti today, after installing and setting everything up, it appears to be working fine. I load up my games, everything appears to be running fine, no artifacting or glitches... but after like 2-3 minutes, my PC hard resets.. (Shuts down fully, then restarts on its own.)

Specs below:

i7 8700

Asus Maximus X Hero

GTX 1080 Ti

Silverstone Strider 550w PSU (Gold Rated)

I know the requirements listed for power are between 600-650w for the 1080 Ti, however i researched that 550w should be enough pending that the PSU is decent enough to handle heavy load. From the comments I read, people said that yeah it might be tight however it should be fine.

I even checked a wattage calculator and it gave me 538w load, recommenced 588w.

Is there anything i can do to rule out the PSU, or is it in fact my system not having enough power?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Is your psu the Silverstone Strider Gold ST55F-G 550W? How old is it now? It was a good psu when reviewed back in 2013 and has no trouble pulling 550w.

Is it restarting 2-3min into gaming? Or from when you start the machine? Does it work fine just web browsing or idle on desktop? 1080ti full bore should be max 300w so you should have about 200w spare for cpu and rest of system. You can try lowering power target in MSI afterburner to 90% of the 1080ti and see if it changes anything. Same for auto-OC on your cpu if you have that enabled.

Honestly it sounds like you might have a short somewhere and psu protection is tripping and restarting your machine. If you can test with another gpu or psu I would see if that rules it out, otherwise check to make sure the gpu or anything else isn't shorting out your rig.

I would ask @shilka about the psu though and whether it can stand the test of time.

I have a 550w rosewill capstone 80 plus gold power supply and my system is similar to yours except mine is heavily overclocked to the max. I don't see any problems with my current system. Is your system overclocked by any chance? Also you want to make sure your 1080ti isn't overheating being used. Often times the thermal paste gets dry and your 1080ti overheats and thus you see the restart problem.

First dont use any of those rubbish calculators they are always 28% or more overstated

The oldest SilverStone Strider Gold was pretty good for its time but the two series that came afterwards was much worse
It only had a 3 year warranty so if you had it for longer than that there is no warranty left

Its not the greatest PSU in the world there its only rated to do its full power at 40c is no warranty left and it sounds like it might not be able to do its rated 540 watts anymore
Buy a new PSU a Seasonic Foucs Plus or a Prime Ultra would be a good option

Edit: the OEM is Enhance Electronics which is not a company i have a very high opinion about
As i said before its only rated for 40c so the problem might actually be that its getting too hot and its OTP shutting the PSU down and not OCP or OLP

Most good series are rated for full power at 50c so 40c is a step down but its not totally useless like 25 or 30c

Yup thats the PSU... I wasnt having any issues with my 1070 earlier...

How do i check or stop it from shorting out?

I orderd another PSU and will see if its it...

I lowered the power limit to 90% and it gave me maybe an extra 2 min of gameplay before hard reset. It does not happen when browsing or using the computer regularly, just under load.

Another weird thing is, after a certain time when it resets, my WIFI completely dies, like it will not find any connections until i reset Cmos which fixes it... any indication of what that could be?

Im hoping I didn't buy a lemon of a 1080 TI, which again seems weird because even the few min of gameplay i get it, everything otherwise is normal, until the reset... But if lowering to 90% power and it still happens, then what?

Hi,
1080ti depending on which model I've seen my ftw3 soak up 300w+
CPU is another story just a 5930k can soak up quite a bit depending on which clocks are used not to mention anything else on the system.
8700 and a 1080ti I wouldn't use anything less than 850w platinum psu.

I'd rather have usage overstated than understated.
Overstated doesn't cause system restarts... and allows system upgrades in the future :)

sorry to bring it to you but your PSU is too weak for your setup. It will handle the standard load when you start a game but since both your cpu and gpu ramp up during a game you at some point surpass the total max load point of 550W which is when the pc resets. Your max load will be around 600-650W and in addition you always need to make sure you run around 70% of your max power so get a 800-900W power supply to solve your problem

If it were a new, quality, 550w PSU, it would likely handle the system fine at stock settings, but it wouldn't have much headroom and overclocking would rapidly outpace it.

An older PSU is likely to be problematic; they do degrade over time and with use.

Sounds about right, weird as some people are still saying 550w was enough for them...

I should have included that its an 8700k not a regular 8700, OC'd to 5ghz (1.32v)

Hopefully that fixes it. I ordered an 800w Titanium PSU (Silverstone SX800-LTI)

Hi,
Yep just checked ftw3 using 330w cpu near 200w at only 4.6 and my clock settings are fairly docile
So you can see all of this using hwinfo free if the system doesn't shut down that is :D

You guys were right with the PSU.

I just came home and gave it ago with 80% power, as my new PSU hasnt arrived yet. Played for about 5-10 min, no hard reset... Longest ive gone without any issues since. Guess i'll wait for the new PSU, dont want to run at 80%, thats a no go right?

Hi,
Not optimum gotta do what you gotta do though until another shows up :)
