I was having an increasingly infuriating time delidding my two year old 7920x, so I kind of impulse bought a 10940x. (Ironically I gave the 7920x delid process another shot and finally got expected results)

First impressions of my 10940x is it is able to achieve higher frequencies at lower voltage than my 7920x. For instance I was able to run an 8 hour stress test of Real Bench with the vcore at 1.2v and it passed at 4.7. I needed 1.3v to do the same with my 7920x.

Doing some specific core overclocking, I tested running my six best cores at 5.1 at 1.34v. I was able to have a crash free light Battlefield 1 session, but the P3D simulator I use crashed.

I was also able to get my mesh multiplier to 34, whereas on my 7920x, I could never get it passed 32. I haven't tried higher than 34 yet.

With lower voltage, the 10940x temps are still a few degrees higher than my 7920x delidded. I assume that's because there's two more cores and the delid keeps my 7920x cooler at higher voltage. Testing both at 4.7 though, the wattage output from the wall was about the same, even with the two extra cores due to the voltage difference required.

It's still early in this adventure, but I'll keep updating the results I'm seeing on the Apex VI with these two chips.

I have the APEX and just installed the i9-10920X. I used Intel Performance Maximizer to OC and it got 4.8 when using 1-2 cores and 4.7 when using 3-12 cores. It runs great but when I run Intel XTU, I get Current/EDP Limit Throttling and cores are only hitting 4.5-4.6. My CPU runs cool on a Corsair H150i and I have a Corsair HX850i power supply. I also get some choke noise when running XTU benchmark. One other thing I noticed was there was not OC preset for the i9-10920X in BIOS like there was for my last CPU, the 7900X.

Hi,
I've never noticed any presets likely wouldn't use them even if I had
Only presets are for memory Raja 4k b-die which doesn't work very well either

850w is cutting it pretty close for a 12 core probably why you get coil whine so make sure any power saver switch is off if it has one.
1000w would be better depending on graphic's card or cards.

Raja profile on x299 apex works very well for me with minor tweaks. Running 4000 c16 with ~380trfc.

The bios presets for CpU overclocking are quite conservative... eg, they have to account for the weaker CPU samples also so the voltages tend to run high. Useful as a basic guide, but I'd recommend adjusting voltages if you try any. To remove that Current limit you need to manually set the current limit and power limits in bios, disable Vin tracking and lower VCCIn "as needed".

The ram OC presets are excellent starting points for fine tuning further and are available in all ROG level boards.

Getting back to the CPu OC. Check the forum for the 10980XE @ 5GHHz thread. you can get help there. And basically, most every 10xxx chip/SKU is best run with manual override voltage with "synch all cores" for the multiplier.

POst up the voltages the intel tuner is using for the per-core OC it worked out...

Hi,
Any auto oc usually throws cpu strap & memory BLK to 125 which throws everything into weird land :)

Think Raja preset is mostly for 3200c14 kit or at least is what it says
3600c16 for example same bin or not can use different timings with less dimm voltage than 3200c14 would for 4k mhz

UH, no. that is just wrong. Kinda shows you really have no idea what you are saying here.
The Ram Presets and CPU OC presets are on different bios pages and totally unrelated bios programming. There are presets for 100 and 125 (and 166 on some platforms). memory divider ratios are not the same.
Let's not turn this thread into a:

Hi,
Auto oc is totally different dude
It asks you simple setup questions
Are you on Air or water cooled/ ....
So yeah maybe not on the rog board but on asus x99 sabertooth and I believe x299 mark 2 and x299 prime deluxe auto oc is different and yes also changes memory as well as core clocks.

He was asking about an auto OC for the CPU on the APEX which is a ROG board. And yes, there are presets for whether you have water or air cooling - these simply lower the ceiling for the preset in accord with the dozens of CPU samples used to set the parameters and thermal limits of stability. all this has been explained in the ROG threads.

If you want help overclocking the rig, bring the discussion here. :)

Hi,
lol not really any oc secretes
All core 4.8 manual core voltage 1.225 to 1.250v see how it goes leave everything else on auto.

If it's phantom throttling you could try increasing your input voltage to 1.9-1.95v range and see if it helps. I'm not sure how XTU works as I've never used it so not sure how it adjusts settings, you may have to increase the power limits to the maximum in the BIOS.

Hi i have a bad Problem:
My NH-D15 chromax.black is quite near to the first PCIE Slot and the 3090 FE has no chance to fit.
So i have tried to use the PCIE_X16/X8_3 Slot and the Card working @16x Speed, so far so good.
Then i pluged in my SB ZxR Sound Card PCIE_X8_2 Slot and the Graphic Card runs only @8x.
What can i do to get back 16x for my Graphic Card?!
My CPU is a 10940x with 48 Lanes.

Manual doesn't specify skiping the top slot but looks like top is only one always x16, I'd try the bottom-most slot and if that doesn't work you might be out of luck.. I'm assuming it doesn't fit in the X4 slot from the PCH?

Hi,
I've used the gpu as x8 before absolutely no difference performance wise.
You could always rotate the cooler no rule state it has to exhaust out the back
